Is there any part on the 41mm forks that is interchangeable with the 43mm forks? My bike is in the shop because the front axle wont come out and they said that they will have to replace at least part of the forks? So I figured maybe I can upgrade at the same time. |

BULL$!! un the axle can come out, start to take it out and as soon as it gets stuck and starts to spreads the fork legs hut the caliper side leg with a rubber mallet, just keep unscrewing it a little at a time and hitting it, then when axle is out clean with a wire wheel/bruch and use antiseze to put back together (dont like beat the $hit out of it but give it good "taps" |

Yeah I know that the front axle problems seem stupid, but if they want to replace the front end of the bike with new stuff I'm cool with that. Just wondering if i could swap over to the 43's. |

Just guessing (so my advice is worth half what you paid for it) but... Just the geometry of the situation says the diameter being 2mm larger means that the center-to-center distance between forks is 2mm greater (if you're using the same wheel and spacers). That's going to make the triple clamps unusable. Dunno about internals - I don't imagine there are any parts which are interchangeable. Without some clever machining, you'd need a full front end swap I'd bet. Triples AND forks. I would imagine that you might be able to bore the triples 2mm larger and have enough "meat" leftover - and at the same time, move the hole centers outward 1mm each side. |

Does the shop know its a left handed thread? (Clockwise to loosen) It's stamped on the lower leg....... |

This is a common problem usually found at the first tyre change. Mine was done by the shop and they hit it with a cold chiesil and left a dirty big mark on the axle. Then they told me there was no problem and charged me for it cause it was my maintenance problem. Best to use a G-clamp to keep the fork legs from spreading. Get some cloth to protect the fork lowers, put the clamp through the wheel and tighten to the lower. Then proceed to unscrew the axle. |

Slaughter--I dunno, I read that the Helibars upper tripleclamp would fit all years, 03 - 05. I think the fork outer (top) tubes are the same (at least, the same diameter where they fit in the clamps), only the lower tubes are larger (possibly thinner bushings to allow the extra 2mm ID?) and I'd suspect the fork lowers--the cast pieces that hold the axle clamp and brake boss--are probably the same, too (at least, if I was designing it, that's how I would try to do it). If that's right, then there would be no difference in the wheel fitment, spacing, etc. |

Kootenay, I ought to look into that because the larger diameter are just a tad less flexible in hard braking. I still haven't rolled my "skinny" fork tubes since my last crash to see if they're still straight. Now you got me thinking. |

Seems like I remember different steering damper brackets which would indicate different sliders (uppers)... |

The 41mm slider tube forks have 54mm outer fork tubes at both the upper and lower triple clamps. The 43mm slider tube forks have 54mm outer fork tubes at the upper triple clamp and 56mm outer fork tubes at the lower triple clamps. The upper triple clamps on the XBS models, and presumably the XBR models, are the same for both the 54mm and 56mm forks (for XB-S models, part number J0105.1AD or J0105.1ADA). The A suffix at the end indicates a superceding part number that is backwards compatible. The lower triple tree is different for the 41mm vs 43mm forks, J0106.02A8A-J0106.02A8C for the 41mm models, J0106.3A8A for the 43mm forks. It sure looks like virtually every component in the 41mm fork has a different part number than the 43mm fork. No component of significant cost is the same. They either made the adjustments in the lower leg casting, or changed the diameter of the slider where it fits into the casting, to be able to accommodate the same wheel due to the stuff Slaughter said. You can't buy the end casting, it is integrated into the Slider Component Assy part number that comes complete with the end, the slider, the seals, and bushings. Al |
