By polish I mean windshield/plastic polish, the finest grade only. Not scratch remover, just polish.  The S100 "Detail and Wax" is outstanding for bringing back a mirror finish. Worked great on my buddy's black XB9S airbox cover. | ||

I read here that the Novus products work, so I picked up a bottle of Novus 2 at the dealership recently. I just tried it this evening and the results were pretty good...given enough time and elbow grease I think I could eliminate the gasoline "stains" on my airbox cover completely. | ||

I've used both Novus 2 and S100 and feel the S100 does a better job of removing that clouding from the gas. | ||

Same things happened to me and I used Blue magic metal polish and it worked great. Can't even see the spot. | ||

once you have seen what gas does to a SX tank cover, it becomes obvious normal polish won't cut it. You need the Novus #3 and then #2. Take a lot of time and be patient, and follow the instructions to the letter. It will feel like it is taking forever, but you will get there soon enough. Take off the tank cover, throw a good DVD in the player, and make yourself comfortable. The Harley sealer glaze makes a great last step, and seems to make the airbox slightly less susceptible to gas (though still very sensitive). Novus 1 (as far as I can tell) just removes the static charge so the cover does not attract dust. I don't think it adds much from a polishing standpoint. The Harley sealer glaze is great stuff for that last step. It's only a major PITA where when you splash it up against the raised logo or rubber X, it's a pain to get in there to buff it without scratching things (by using a wood dowel to push the cotton cloth or something). It'll be fine, just take your time and follow the instructions on the Novus bottles. | ||

And just to reinforce this... take your time. If you try and rush it, or use something other then soft cotton, or other tools to try and speed stuff up, you can do more damage then you already have, and that is even harder to get out. | ||

I applied the Venture Tape kit found on ebay for the XB9S. Instead of installing the fly screen portion, I canalized it to cover sections of the clear airbox cover - results are better than expected - not to mention, no more scratches where my belt buckle hits the rear of the airbox cover.
