It seems more Bueller's then just me had engine lights come on this weekend. Mine might be far worse than others. I have an 03XB9S and it only has about 3K on it. I purchased it used and put about 300 miles on it since the weather has warmed up.

So this weekend I went on a nice run, not too spirited, just for a cruise about 80 miles. The bike ran flawlessly. However I did notice a small amount of oil leaking around the return fitting from the oil cooler when I returned. It was very minor so I didn't think much of it. Figured I would have the dealer check it out the next time I took it in.

So yesterday I take the bike out for a short errand run and on the way back the engine light starts coming on, then going off. I thought ohhhh sh-t. Well it went off and all seemed ok. So just when I thought maybe it was a fluke it comes on again as I pulled in my driveway. I did some poking around and checking the sensors and signs of oil leaks and all seemed fine except for a very very small amount of oil from the fitting again. No big deal right? So I let the bike cool down and started it up and all looked fine...no light. So I took it for a spin around the block and all of a sudden the light came on and the engine ran rough. I quickly turned the engine off and coasted it home. I then let it cool again and started it....(this is where I think I made the huge mistake). The bike ran rough and just stopped. Now it won't do anything. I don't know if it seized or what but it doesn't look good. When I flip the red switch before hitting the ignition, no sound...no nothing. The sound or lack there of is sickining. Did I kill my baby? I haven't been able to sleep all night and I am afraid my own dumb ignorance was the reason. But my "do it myself to save a buck" mentality may have just bit me in the ! I doubt it is still under warranty too.

Call DaveS at Appleton HD tommorrow, his number is under his profile which is easy to find under the Sponsor section and the Appleton banner, he can check and see if you still have warranty left, or call the number on your warranty card. The oil leak has nothing to do with the check engine light, unless you were mistaking it for the oil light. If so, then check your oil level. If its cold, and not showing any at all on the stick then it "could" be oil related. I would be more willing to bet you have a short somewhere that was causing a ground to fault for either the fuel pump or the injectors. You should have atleast a 1 year warrenty unless you purchased the bike used.

Yes I did purchase the bike used. Had only 2,789 miles on it. So I have no warranty card...I guess this negates the warranty? It was the engine oil pressure light...the "V" light..not the oil lamp. I checked the oil level and it was just fine in normal operating range. I could probably give my local dealer a call to find the same warranty info...instead of bugging DaveS.

check the relays in the fuse box, that may be causing your problems. If the engine was locked up you would still get the fuel pump whine.

Really? That is the fuel pump that makes that whining noise. I thought it was in the engine. That is good news...I think. Thanks!

Sounds like a dead battery to me. In any case, doesn't sound so bad. I don't think starting it the last time would hurt anything if it has enough oil in it.

Good luck,
Bill

I will check the battery. I did have problems with it over the winter but since I got the tender it has been fine. However I haven't had it on much now since it has warmed up. Man I hope that is the only thing wrong. Thanks again.

Definitely sounds like electrical. The "V" light is your "check engine" light, not your "oil pressure" light.

Ok I found a blown fuse. I replaced it and now I get the "whine" from the fuel pump and it starts. It will only turn over if I give it some throttle to raise the rpms. I disconnected the battery at one point so I figure the ECM needs to relearn. I shouldn't have to give it gas to keep it running but if I don't it stalls out. The check engine light also comes on after a few seconds and stays on.

During all this time, did you ever check the oil level? Just wondering?

Brucelee...I checked the oil many times just to make sure. The level is fine and in normal operating range. If I knew how to find out a code for the engine light I could get to the bottom of this I think.

Shandon,
You have a short somewhere. Take off your seat and check the BIG bundle of wiring from the ecu. Make sure none of that bundle is rubbing anything under your seat. I had a similar problem to yours and as it turned out, the wires were rubbing the battery 'shelf' under the seat. For the time being, pull up on that bundle of wires to get it away from anything shorting it, and try to start it again without the throttle.

Thanks Kowpow...I will certainly check that out tonight. I think some electrical tape and rubber insulation can take care of that.

Yes indeed. Hopefully it hasn't rubbed into the wire itself. If so, you'll need to repair that area with a fresh piece of similar sized braided wire. Best of luck.

Jumping a wire from port 1 to port 2 on your datalink will make the engine light blink the error code(s). More info in the Service Manual and in previous posts here (sorry, I ain't got a lot of my lunch break left to look 'em up)

I bet the codes will reflect a dead battery and low voltage to the coil. My bike did this 6 months ago. Dead stator/voltage regulator/battery.

Charge your battery. If it starts right up, you've got it narrowed down.

well i found the culprit... or so we thought. When i first tried to start the bike it was one lunging so what else to do than touch the header. yeah the rear was hot but the front was not. front cylinder was not firing. pulled the plug, fouled. while looking under the seat at the wires a discoloration of the metal battery tray caught my eye, discoloration only caused by electricity, sure enough as i examined the wires the one to the coil was burnt almost all the way through, and another next to it was starting. a quick fix of e-tape(not to be used on e-mail) and problem solved, or so we thought. started again still one lunging. so new thought maybe the plug wires is bad so we switched the two and...once again only firing rear cylinder. so just out of curiosity we pulled the coil. on the bottom of the coil we discovered a bubble and a crack on the side the front cylinder plug wire connects to. ah ha although that was like the fourth ah ha of the night. its amazing how one thing fails and makes other stuff fail too. well thats just an update but later this week will show us what will come of a new coil. everyone cross your fingers i got it this time.

Jan and Travis are the best!!! These guys showed up to my house without ever meeting me and performed surgery. They were like Junk Yard Wars All-Stars on that machine. I was speechless for minutes at a time just watching them eliminate possible causes for the problem. They had my XB in pieces in a matter of seconds. Travis "The Spark Chaser" was all up in it while Jan "The Wheel Spinner" dissected the bike and found the problems...and the amazing thing is they did this all while talking on the cell making booty call plans and drinking a beer. I can't say thanks enough for what they did.

By the way I found a coil. I will attempt to install it tonight. I wouldn't be surprised if these guys show up and do it for me. Great to meet such quality Buellers from this site.

...you guys make house calls globally????
Could put the local Buell technicians out of business...if they don't do it to themselves first...
Now, that wasn't nice! Some of them are stand-up guys...that's the trouble with generalities, it catches the good guys along with the bad...must try to avoid this in future...

I got it taken care of Jan. I located a coil at your favorite dealership SVHD, surprised as hell they still had one in stock and even cheaper then Whites. I put it in and had it all back together in 15 minutes. Thanks to the visual instruction you and Travis gave me I was able to go for a ride in a matter of minutes. All is well and its running perfect. I even fixed the small oil leak I had with some teflon tape. I'll be away in State College this weekend but hopefully we can get together and ride soon. In any case, I will have a present for you next time I roll into Ship..your favorite TROEGS. Thanks again man, i'm rollen again.
