Is anyone running a breather/catch-can set up similar to the ones we all had on our tubers? I've gutted the airbox (like Cowtown) and found a bunch of oily goo under the airbox cover (not cool for only having 500 miles on the clock). I was looking for other people's routing methods, and especially the catch-can location. It just ain't as easy as on the old cyclone. Ideas? cj |

Make sure your oil tank is not overfilled. |

On our race bike we just ran two long tubes from the breather PCV valves to the tail unit and attached each end to one of those double ended mini K&N type filters (from Custom Chrome I think, around US$20 if that). This was then mounted into a small open topped plastic box to catch any drips etc, although in 18 months we haven't seen a drop of oil out of them. (Message edited by trojan on April 01, 2005) |

Matt is the plastic box required for racing ? I put a T under the air box and rerouted a long line down to just behind the subframe and riders heal gaurd and zip striped it to the fuel overflow. That hid it well. I could take some pics and send em later. |

rigga, are you using a catch can or just the mini filter? noface, i tried searching for this info but all i ever got was the threads of people using the XB rocker boxes on the tubers. i'll go and try again, though. thanks cj |

Rigga... I hope that thing does not catch on fire if anyone ever overfills the oil tank! |

no oil has dripped out off the filters since i installed them, and i only ever got a slight misting of oil in the airbox when they were positioned normally...... so i doubt there is any chance of a fire happening as i look after the bike i know the oil level is right and not overfilled |

here is the link to the KV pics I did on my 9R (lol, it was white way back then) There's also a couple other examples of XB's in that archive and the next. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/24527.html#POST158230 |

Here is my set up. I'm not sure if it's the best way to go but it was easy and looks great thru the blue CityX cover.

thanks for the help, fellas. some great ideas. noface - thanks for the link, it would have taken me forever to find that. ejiii - i've got a city-x and had the same idea for the breather filter to be seen with the main filter. nice! |

We have found on the older models and the XB that the longer you can make the breather hoses then the less chance there is of any oil coming out (obviously really I suppose). The plastic box wasn't a requirement for racing but it was just a 'belt & braces' setup. |

The longer the breather is away from the engine the better it is for sure from getting oil coming out. I set mine up for sheer ease of installation. What I really want to do is install a 4-way hose fitting instead of the 3-way and have a plugged "schmutz" tube coming off the lower leg. Gravity will pull the heavy liquid deposits down into the plugged tube and the vapor can go up and out the filter. The hard part is finding a 4-way "cross" hose fitting. I have been everywhere. High end hardware stores, Earl's etc. No luck. I can do it with 2 3-way tees but a 4-way would be sano. Anyone have a suggestion on where to get a 4-way? I'm all ears.

You might be able to tap and thread another hole onto the brass 3 way fitting. |

I had the same problem on my S2, ended up getting the XB rocker boxes for it and it helped for 80% of the blow by. Had the Forcewinder. I ran the breather filter and catch can under the rear fender(must of have been 5 feet of hose). Still puked oil.(great for white wheels by the way) My XB has had the PCV valves replaced once about 17,000 miles and I noticed it was leaking again. Personally, I would rather it get back in the intake, just as it was originally designed on the tubers - same as the XB's. Buell know it leaks or there would be a better design for this problem. |

ok, fellas. i finished up my breather system and it's working like a champ. i don't have pics right now but i'll try and get them tomorrow. what i did was... 1. run the breather hoses toward the left side of the frame 2. T'd from the rear rocker back through the fan casing and down to the fuel pump area. 3. T'd from the front rocker to an L fitting. 4. ran a small length of hose between the two Ts. 5. attached a small, hard, clear plastic bottle to the end of the line running aft and secured it to the fuel line with a velcro strap 6. drilled through the airbox base-plate and put on a small filter. it turned out really well and i'm shocked at the amount of milky moisture (no oil yet) i'm finding in the catch can. i'm terribly disappointed that the catch can kevin drum (KDFab) custom made for me is too big to fit anywhere on the XB. this thing is gorgeous! anyone know of a tuber that needs a catch can? |
