I think the only difference is the different, improved airbox. There are a few minor part upgrades I think but not much. The real differences were in the '05 models. Maybe one of the dealers can respond if I am wrong.

Didn't they improve the belt, and the bearings also?

There weren't any significant changes. The belt on the 04 will last longer.

They changed the belts for '04, which included the pulleys and beltgaurds from the '04 XB12. The '05 9's got the 12 airbox and reworked EFI.

The '04 has the belt improvements; supposedly different (lighter?) pistons; passenger footpeg brackets are different; didn't the '04 get the bigger diameter front fork tubes?

Just minor upgrades.

Check out this thread that I started on this subject last year: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/62912.html

The wheel bearings were an a free upgrade on the early '03 models. Late '03 models and newer bikes would have come with the improved wheel bearings from the factory, identified by an orange seal instead of a black seal.

The '04 XB9S got lower passenger peg brackets, the improved belt setup (including pulleys and guards), the new side stand, and a slightly different toe peg on the shifter. The part number has not changed between the '03 XB9 and the '05 XB9.

The larger forks (43mm vs. 41mm), XB12 airbox lid, one piece throttle body, revised fuel injection, new steering head bearings, and quieter fuel pump didn't show up until the '05 model year.

Hope this helps,
Mike L.
