I knew they were fouled but this is just RIDICULOUS the top of the rear piston looked pretty much the same. And whats up with the damn oil in the airbox? (Message edited by buelltroll on March 09, 2005) |

Go ahead and post what kind of camera you were using, undoubtedly it will be asked. How many miles? |

Only a few thousand miles on these plugs I'm pretty sure its from starting it n revving it up n stuff in the cold.I'm just scared about the top of the piston looking the same. The camera is a Nikon coolpix 3100. |

The oil in the airbox is normal. Comes from those breather tubes. Just wipe it out and all is good. As for the plugs. If you've been starting it up and reving it then shutting it off. That's probably what did it. (Message edited by cataract2 on March 09, 2005) |

That and the battery pretty much died so it was weak and didnt wanna start eventually.I've already replaced the plugs,I'm really only worried about how burned the top of the piston looked. |

Buelltroll- That doesn't look that bad to me. You've got light carbon fouling of the plug which would burn right off if you fired the bike up and rode it ~5 miles at ~60 MPH. The same applies to the top of your piston. If it looks like this, it's not burned, it just has a soft layer of black carbon on it. Now if it continued fouling like this, eventually you'd build up enough thickness where it would cause problems like detonation that could cause serious engine problems. Follow the advice about not reving the bike after cranking it and I think you'll be OK. |

Not a problem since the battery is completely dead n the new one is charging on the trickler. |

Is it the pic or are the threads black all the way to the top? |

Thanks Shawn, I can see the picture of the spark plug. My question to Buelltroll is: Are the threads sooty black indicating a loose spark plug? |

Ok, to add to this. What's everyones feeling with the breather tubes dumping into the box and then getting sucked into the intake? Wouldn't it be better without it? Does this cause any power loss? Possible that it could build up in the throttle body and cause problems? Just deciding if I should install the kit from Al at American Sportbike to re-route my lines. |

On my sportster the right side of the bike would be litterally covered with oil. When I would take the airfilter off and look into the carb I would see a layer of oil in there. With my buell I see a few drips of oil on the airbox baseplate and the filter is basically dry. I don't think its a problem with the buell. If it would be like my sporty, I would definitely reroute breather hoses. |

Do I read between the lines that you have been starting the engine periodically through the winter as a good maintainence sort of thing, and that's why your battery is dead? That is not a good program. I'd expand on the subject if you like, but if that's not what you were doing then I'm off topic. Re-route the breathers. Some bikes puke more than others. It gets worse with age. It does no good routed back into the carb except for satisfying the EPA. |

When I rejet my carb on my Kawasaki Vulcan, I also relocated the breather because an irritating amount of oil was dribbling all over the bike, but I haven't done any mods to my Buell (XB9S) at all. From reading this thread, can I assume that the oil coming from the breather on my Buell isn't going to be a big problem? Kathy |

Kathy...While the Buell engine is patterned after the Sportster engine, the Buell engineers seem to have solved it for the Buells with a reed type breather system. You may get some oil mist, but it is very minor. Simply wipe up any residue in the airbox and enjoy the ride. Having said that, I am not sure how much mist you might get in a heavily modified Buell. Mine is mostly stock...a few mods but keeping it close to stock, and I have had very little oil residue compared to the Sportsters I have had, usually caused when I ran it at high RPM...less than the Buell redline. Hope this helps...at least to relieve your mind. Cyko Bob |
