How long have you been riding? What you buy depends entirely on what style of riding you do and what you can afford and how much experience you have

i test rode both. i thought the 9 was smoother, but ended up buying the 12 because, as a leftover, it was actually cheaper than the new 9. plus, the 12 is black with yellow wheels and i think that is way cool. the seat on the 12 is also more to my liking. subtle differences, but nonetheless a part of my decision. i have not been disappointed.

XB9SX, unless you are really short, in which case get one anyway and find somebody who wants to trade seats.

GO+1 nut:I been riding for 2 years 5.000 miles. Learned on the Blast.
Builtbyted:what is the difference between those two seats?
Reepicheep:So you really like the XB9SX....what do you think of the XB9S?
Friends...my problem is prob. between the XB9S and XB12S since I am not buying the 2005 I do not have access to the XB9SX.
Thanks

I have a XB9S and absolutely Love It! I have no regrets. It has more power than you'll ever need. And the handling is incredible! If you can still get a XB9S for a good price, GO FOR IT!

i compared the '04 XB12SX with the '05 city x. the city x seat was cushy and flat while the 12 was more firm and sculpted.

I have a 04 xb9s and I love it, I have also been riding two years about 8k miles, i feel like I made the right choice in the 9s. I mean I really LOVE it. I can't explain it, I think I love my bike more than my wife.

Go+nut: I am pretty sure a lot of people have that problem(is it a problem?).
Tell me whenever you make a ride into the city or north NYC. The big problem here is that it seems that dealers dont sell buells anymore.

If you don't go fast,(that may soon change) buy the 9, it handles the same, but costs considerably less. There are four different Buell seats to fit your height and a Corbin that can be made to fit you. I really enjoy my bike too bike, but love the wife more. Although I have seen my bike naked now. Hmm.

Lastcyclone , what do you mean "if you dont go fast by the 9". Ive rode both , I think the 9 is quicker than the 12 , the 12 has more torque but runs out of revs quick , get the 9 on the boil and its power lays down smoother more controllable[ie:less torque] that is why I bought an 05 9.Money had no role at this point, just didnt' care for the John Deere stroke motor. If i feel the need for more power I will put a big bore kit on, but its to much fun as it is.Buell race kit installed by dealer before it left showroom.RPM equals speed. Hey we both ride City Crosses

The 12's weren't out when I bought my 9. I was a little disappointed at first, thinking I could've gotten more bike, but honestly I don't think I'm missing too much. I'm really happy with my bike and with the money you can save over a 12, you can get the go fast goodies right away. Plus you may see a difference in insurance costs.

I love my xb9s.

You can't go wrong with the 9 or the 12.

Having ridden both, and being the owner of a XB9S, I would recommend the 9 for you, Roberto. The 9 runs smoother, revs better, and offers more than enough power for someone with two years, (or 20 years:-) experience.
In addition, you can probably find a good left over or used 2003 XB9 for around $5000, a 12 might cost $2000 more:not worth it to me.
If you do get a 2003 XB9, you might want to keep an eye on two things, the belt, and the tires. The belt should be the latest version, part number G0500.02ABR,(printed on the outside of the belt), and the most of the members prefer Michelin Pilot Power, Pirelli Diablo or Metzler M1,tires to the original Dunlop 207's for wear and handling.
As you have pointed out, the real pre-purchase problem is finding a local dealer who really supports Buells BEFORE YOU BUY ONE. The vast majority of Harley dealers do not. I do not know of any dealers in your area, ( there are none on Long Island), but I did have a nice chat with the service manager of Bergen HD, in Rochelle Park, New Jersey. He owns a Buell himself.
Best of luck. I upgraded from a Blast to a XB9 myself last year, and I have had a ton of fun.

With regard to the S versus the SX, the SX is just a *really* well sorted out S, but both are great bikes. The biggest issue with the older S bikes will be the older style belts. The updated old part is very serviceable, but still not as good as the new style belt. Not a huge deal though.

If your tall, and have an older S, I would definitely find a way to get the 9sx seat.

Also, any S owner should go out today and get the handguard parts and retrofit it this afternoon. Best $49 ^h^h^h $53 or so you ever spent.

I have ridden both and I own a 2000 M2. I prefer the 9 over the 12. Like it was stated earler it revs higher and gives you more of a powerband to play with. I think it's a more fun bike to ride.

I had the same question when I was looking to get my buell. I knew I wanted the S over the R, but didn't know if I wanted the 9 or the 12. One ride on the 9 convinced me that was more then enough bang for my buck. I'm sure the 12 would be just as good if not better but for me, the price of insurance, and the colors I wanted, I have no regrets about my choice. I love my XB9S.

Yes there is, I'll take the extra revs from my 9 and easier clutch pull over the 12!

Isn't this board great? If you start reading and posting here, you are pretty much destined to getting your XB soon...

Good luck,

Thanks a lot my friends. I think I may get the XB9S 2003 (the decision is mostly price). The price is of course way better than the XB9SX 2005 and the XB12S 2004.

Thanks again for all the comments....I am getting a new bike this week for sure.

From the comments here it looks like the riding position in the XB9S 2003 is different from the XB12S and from the XB9SX? Am I correct?

Thanks again all and you will have a new rider in the new york city and ct area soon.

After hearing what some are paying for insurance I would get the XB9S over the XB12S. Seems like the 9 is a lot cheaper then the 12. Plus if you want more power you can always upgrade the 9.

Not quite right:-).
The 2003 XB9S and the subsequent years XB12S have the same riding position.
The City Cross, differs in the following ways:
1. The seat is a bit higher, about a half inch.
2. The handle bars are a bit different.
Altogether, not a real big difference.
I am sure you will enjoy your '03 XB9S.........as soon as the snow melts.
