Hey Guys My speedo quit working and my odometer rolled back to the "F" reserve position...not counting the miles. My check engine light came on too. For those of you that have experienced the speedo sensor problem, is that what happened to yours too? If that is indeed the problem, Daves, how much does that item cost? As you know I am overseas, so it will be hard for me to warranty this item. Thanks guys for your help, Cyko Bob |

You have the S, it does not have the chronic speedo sensor problem the other bikes had. Try just pulling the thing and cleaning it, and checking connections. I never experienced the failure on an XB, so I don't know what the odometer or check engine light do. It's probably a $50 to $70 part ($USD). |

I had that problem on a 2003 XB9R and I tried cleaning it off but it was totally dead. I had it replaced under warranty. I have heard there is an "updated" part that is either lower voltage or is filtered to prevent the sensor from blowing. |

When my speedo sensor went dead, it blew the ignition fuse! Bike would only run with it unplugged. Replaced under extended warranty. |

I have an 03 xb9r and the Vehicle Speed Sensor went south shortly after I got the bike. My check engine light never came on but the odometer will stop working because it uses the same VSS input as the Speedometer. Unfortunately the sensor is a solid state device that you can't easily test, but just to be certain the VSS is faulty you can test out the rest of the circuits involved using the diagrams in the service manual. Or you can just replace the sensor since it's generally the fault anyway. |

I have had two go in mine. When you turn the key on you should still see the speedometer needle sweep from one side to the other. The odometer also quits counting miles. |

I lost a speedo on my M1... I've could had rode years and the odometer would have never counted the miles.. which is kind of scary. What if you just pulled the connection on the speedo..would the same thing happen? NOW THAT HAS TO MAKE YOU THINK. |

No speedo, no odo, no idea how much gas you have left! |

For the record, the chronic sensor failures was an issue on all the tubers, and the 03 XB9R's. It was *not* an issue for any XB9S's. I believe it was fixed for all the 12's as well. Not to say the 9s's can't fail, just that it is unusual, and the stock setup is fine (regulated 5v supply instead of battery voltage). |

Thanks for all the input. I reviewed past posts, plus read all of your responses. I am nearly certain it is the Speedo Sensor. I just sent an e-mail to Daves to send me one. BTW, I have a 2003 XB9S, even though it is not supposed to be a problem with them. Again, thanks guys for all the input. This board is great! Cyko Bob |
