Hi all, just had my pride and joy(XB9R) in for its 5000 mile service, I have the race pipe, ECM and K&N fitted, the 12 airbox cover is on order and my next move was to de-snorkel. i was talking to the tech about this and he suggested that this is not an advisable move due to the low temperatures here in Scotland. He said that the bike would develop symptoms similar to, but obviously not caused by, carb iceing(those of you who have owned big Kwacks before will know what that is!). Just thought I would run it by you guys and see what you think. Should I just whip it out!!! Cheers guys..love the site. |

its freezing here in birmingham too mate, just pull the thing out to improve performance and pop to your hd dealer and get some fuel addative for these conditions, cant think what its called right now but sure someone wil come on and tell ya..... not sure though the f.i bikes suffer the same as the cabed ones due to the fuel being injected under pressure? |

I say rip it out... I ran up to Flag at temps of about 35F at an average of probably 100MPH and had no trouble at all... Also... The standard procedure when installing the race kit calls for the removal of the snorkel... |

has anyone felt or seen [dyno #s] a performance gain by removing the snorkel. Performance Bikes [a british motorcycle magizine, nov, 1999 issue] has an in depth study of airboxes and to qoute them "the airbox is there primarily as a still-air reservoir from which the engine can drink with the least effort.without it ,the engine would be struggling to pull in air that was trying to rush away at anything up to 190 mph. To work properly the airbox has to be big. currently their capacity is 10 to 15 times the engine capacity.this is so each cylinder can take its lungfull of air without causing too much disturbance in the total reservoir. The box needs plenty of volume, but it dosent need a particulary big entry. A four stroke four breathes one cylinder at a time, through a 38mm carb in the kawasakis case and a 46mm throttle body on the hayabusa. for static power, the airbox intake only needs to flow the same amount and a 38 or 46mm entry would be sufficient." |

Exupmonkey, If you check the race kit install instructions, it specifically says to remove the snorkel when installing the K&N, ECM and race muffler. I have the race kit, and I found mine still on when I did a filter check. Apparently, the dealer tech forgot to pull it. |

Only real difference Ive noticed is you can hear some more intake noise - but, I havent put it back in after the race kit install. Ive not noticed any damage to the frame in that area or any other negative effects of not having it out - just pull it ! |

I experimented with mine in and out, have the Race ECM, Drummer, 12 Airbox on a XB9R. I noticed that the speed that it revs up was reduced significantly, in my opinion by the reduced intake circumference. After one commute run, I took it back out. No paper dyno proof. I ride mine year round, but only occasionally under 35 deg and haven't noticed any problems except my hands getting cold in Northern California. (Message edited by kaese on March 03, 2005) |

Isn't the snorkle there just to please the noise nazis at the EPA, anyway? Mine's still there, btw. I haven't had a good enough reason to remove it, yet. My last bike was a Harley Road Nail err.. King, the CityX is plenty fast bone stock. =) Bob |
