Just got back off a ride to find the side of the bike and my foot covered with oil pulled the fairing and it looks like it is leaking from the oil cooler core, no obvious sign of damage, anyone come across this or know if this can be repaired? | ||

These cannot be reliably repaired. Find a replacement. | ||

Thanks Stevel, I checked with HD and they are still available for $375 here in the UK, went on Ebay and Pinwall in the US has one at $60 delivered including local import and taxes, guess which I went for! I will pull my failed unit and see if I can come up with a plan for a fix just out of interest, just strikes me as an odd failure. Absolutely delighted it was not from the engine. | ||

Shaggin, Thanks for the input, pre used unit ordered, unfortunately would usually expect a few weeks delay but in the current situation could be a bit longer, fortunately have my Sportster and my Landy to keep me going but.. don't like being without my Buell. | ||

Aluminum, so repair would be "sketchy" at best. Use it for a "paperweight." | ||

These are furnace brazed which can only be done in a special oven. Failures are usually caused by vibration fatigue. This fatigue will be throughout the cooler. Even if you correct the leak, another is very likely to reoccur. That is why they are not repaired. | ||

Thanks for the information, always like to learn a bit more. Have pulled the cooler and it looks like the root cause was corrosion, on the rear of the cooler the coating had failed and corrosion had set in, vibration probably did the rest. The bike was used as my all year round commuter for several years and they use salt on the roads in winter here, I should have been more thorough when cleaning the bike. |
