It appears the oil seal/bearing, behind the counter-sprocket/front-pulley, is leaking oil. Has anyone here replaced this? What does it take?

comes as an assembly 1

From what I can tell the crank case needs to be split to service this oil-seal/bearing.
On page 3-83 of our manual it says this:

comes as an assembly 2

I would guess that part is not cheap. Has anyone heard of just replacing the bearings instead of the entire assembly?
To split the cases the cylinder heads need to come off and pistons need dissembling. This may be the death knell for my bike, I have no inclination for removing and tearing the engine down. Maybe there's an FJ900 in my future.

I've not done it, but the seal is installed from the outside. Assuming you were able to pull the old seal out, you should be able to install a new seal as well. There's also a top hat bushing that the seal rides in that may possibly be worn and causing the leak.

Also, unless the bearing is damaged, there's no reason to replace it, so assuming it's just the seal leaking, you might be able to replace just the seal and top hat bushing without splitting the case.

Hi Dean, thanks for the answer.
You wouldn't by chance have the tool that holds the sprocket still so you can remove the sprocket? Would you?

An impact wrench will buzz the sprocket off in a hurry.

"An impact wrench will buzz the sprocket off in a hurry."

Sorry, I'll have to 1000% disagree with that. That massive torque shock load will absolutely wreak havoc on the transmission. And the manual states to NEVER do that.

An impact puts out more WAY more torque than the whole Buell engine!

There are simpler locking mechanisms than that one shown as well, do a little research and you can even make one yourself: )

Since writing this, I've taken these pictures to my old-grizzled mechanic guru.
With one sentence he agreed with both Shoggin and Panshovevo. He said, "Just put the bike in neutral and use an impact wrench, It'll take that right off."
Me, "What? Ok then, if you have so much confidence then you are the guy for the job."
(he is a legit motorcycle repair shop, been in business for more than 30 years)
I'll let you guys know how this goes.}

I put the bike in neutral and had my son step on the rear brake, no problem loosening it with a 1/2 inch drive 18" wrench.
