Bought my CR from K12Pilot, stored her in Staten Island over the winter and went down Sunday to pick her up, I was going to haul her in my truck but the best laid plans oft go awry .. The ride... Woke up at 4am Sunday, left the house at 6:15 got to Staten Island at 12:15, 392 miles and about a half mile from the bike, clutch slave blew and I could not shift the ZR-2... flat shifted and got to Chris's house and parked her. So towing on a Sunday from there to here was gonna be 2,000, only option was to drive the new 1125cr home. Chris is a GREAT guy, had a BBQ fired up and after looking at his scooters, had to prep for a long as ride on a Superbike in NYC traffic. I didn't have my full protective gear and Chris woulda lent me some but is a bit larger and shorter than my skinny ass! So I borrowed a helmet and backpack, put on my Buell Jacket,, pink slip, bill of sale, put insurance on her and printed it out, and a borrowed current inspected tag and registration off another Buell he had and I headed north around 5PM looking at around a 400 mile ride.
Driving around Staten Island I got the feel for her, noting the ergos for the shifter toe peg and brake are a little inward over my 12R, Slipper clutch in city traffic a bit hard on the wrist, but... WOW, Made it over the Goethal's Bridge and hit I-95 north toward Rt17. Gave her a good twist of the throttle and she power wheelied in the 1-2 shift and the 2-3.... YAY! She is one powerful motorcycle! My route...
Driving on 1-95 was a mess, the US Open Golf Tourney was letting out from nearby and about 5 miles in, traffic had slowed to 35 or 40, a line of cars a mile long and .....you know how the idiots go from lane to lane to get 2 or 3 cars ahead... like Frogger....well... one of them clipped my rear license plate and took traction off the tire and pitched me off.... down went my arse and Lucinda. Killed the bike, pulled off my bucket and jacket to check me over... I hit hard on my left side, helmet saved my head, road rash on my knee and various cuts to arm, hands , and,,, I broke my damn shoulder, I knew it was feked, the XRay was taken Monday at the hospital!
Nice guy in a white Ford pick up helped me get the bike up, traffic had stopped in two lanes do I was protected. I took off my bucket and surveyed the damage to Lucinda, scraped radiator pod, Carbon Fiber case protector did it's job, crash button came out of the bar end, scraped clutch lever end and footpeg and a little scrape on the bottom of the carbon fiber and rear swingarm. She was ridable!!!!
I have no clue who hit me, but thank God the two lanes of traffic stopped behind me, all I heard was my head bouncing off I-95 and squeeling tires. I was more worried about the bike's condition and seeing how minor the damage was...On with the bucket and on I went, a man finishes his ride. It's painful but doable, with Lucinda I am not hunched over the tank in Sport position but upright so my attitude is " I CAN DO THIS!" Stopped at a convenience store in Mahwah NJ, popped three motrin and soldiered on. Started heavy rain just past Ramapo Rest stop, then lightning storms, hail, sleet, light snow in the mountains but I drove through the night, stopping to drip dry or duck from the lightning and hail, when my visor was soaked inside and out and I raised it so I could see, rain stung my face badly, the temp dropped into the low 40's, it was 86 when I left Staten Island. I was chilled, soaked to the bone, made it home at 6am.. 450 miles in the shit, broken shoulder and so many nice people wishing me well on the ride I had to do.... folks are amazing and have lots of little stories of random kindness and concern when I stopped to warm up. This is one shelter that literally saved my life... God Bless the folks at Paradox Brewing Co, this tent and a roll of paper towels I found let me soldier on to Exit 30 and into the mountains, I left a dollar for the use of towels.
My wife called NY Police, she knew I left Staten Island around 5, my Mom and her were concerned! lol Cops found my soaked and shivering self in Lake Placid and pulled me over, thought I was gonna get a ticket .... but they got the call to help find me.and 3 minutes later, saw a MC headlight coming over the hill near the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, they pulled me over and said wife was looking for me,,,,not many bikes on the road, they figured it was me! lolol Through rain, hail, T-storms, cold ass fog sleet and snow on road race tires, they are almost slicks.... but I made it! Got three hours sleep and went for Xrays.... sometimes you just gotta man up and do what you gotta do! 450 miles in weather, broken shoulder, no sleep, riding a Superbike at 67 years old....Best bike I ever threw a leg over by light years, and the changes that happen to a man in this situation are not describable really, 13 hours of soul searching, prayer and having faith in my abilities and the bike, life is good and this CR is the finest motorcycle I have ever ridden, she is superb! Looks like you have a separated shoulder. Is that Grade 3? Are you getting surgery or letting it heal on its own? I had a Grade 3 separation about 4 years ago and chose to let it heal on it's own. The doc said the bump would be permanent, but the functionality would be the same as if I got surgery. In other words, the surgery is basically cosmetic to get rid of the collarbone bump. I didn't care as my topless modeling days are over. That being said common sense tells me those 3 ligaments that I tore were there for SOME reason. Anyhow my advice is to rehab the hell out of it. It will be painful, but if you ever want to have you shoulder close to normal every again it's CRITICAL you take the PT seriously. |

"Balls".... Dave, It's nice to know I still have 'em! lololol, nickname when I was younger was "Wild Thing" Harlan, Grade 2, just tore the ligaments, not separated so no surgery but will have "the bump!" "Man what a adventure! ..." I have enjoyed riding Buells since 1998, I still have my XB12R but my lower back does not appreciate long rides, she was my track bike for a while, had her 15 years, just fell in lust for an 1190Sx but wanted to try on an 1125Cr before making the purchase, they are a great part of my joy in life, thanks! "You are the man!" William, all credit to my Lord and my Dad, they both gave me a spine I reckon! lol Also would like to add something about the Q3 Sportmax Dunlop tires, they were barely scuffed so I rode around a bit in SI to srub them in before hitting the turnpike, Chris told me they were new and slick. I read that they were a good tire in the wet, I must say that they were extremely stable, nitrogen filled and handled nicely in the wet, very stable tire and lots of grip, I am glad K12Pilot warned me that they needed to be ridden a bit before putting them to the test, I wrote Dunlop and told them I was impressed. |

I think you might have a Grade 3...if you tore all the ligaments. Grade 2 is where the AC ligament is torn, but the other two ligaments involved are intact. I believe the other 2 ligaments will keep the collarbone in place, avoiding the bump.

Harlan, Was not complete separation, three torn ligaments but shoulder still held together but has the III drop and bump. MRI showed over 50% still attached. He said it was a Grade II because none were separated or torn completely Pete |

+1,000 on rehab, worth its weight in gold. I skated from surgery by a hair in 2008 - doc said "we don't want to cut into you any more right now if we don't have to", PT said "do the rehab and if you get through it, we won't have to operate". Lift, twist, push, pull, curse, cry...it can be done, but you gotta DO it. You're going to love the CR. I love mine. You already have drop pegs on it; I put Uly pegs and a Buell Select seat (1" taller) on mine, and its perfect for my 6'4" frame with the stock clubmans. First scratches are out of the way, now you don't have to do any more! Heal up, and enjoy! |

I feel like the doctors give a half truth when it comes to non-surgical recovery from a Grade 3 separation (Where all the ligaments tear). Yeah, I got back to pain free life but range of motion was compromised. I believe those ligaments pull the shoulder to the rear. I have been seriously trying to get that ROM back for the last 2 years and I think I am close. It wrecked my golf game for the longest and now 4 years later I am just getting back to where my golf game was before the accident. I am close to having that breakout round (you serious golfers know that feeling). I actually shot my lowest round ever then fell off the bike two weeks later back in Dec 2014. So yeah, that injury set me back quite a bit. |

LOL Joe... yup, took her cherry! lololol So I went to the Doc yesterday, I have been working the shoulder and fingers hard, lost grip in left hand, affecting thumb, forefinger and the NY Salute one... could not pull up a zipper or hold a cup of coffee, it was painful but I kept going until it was unbearable then iced down, followed up with a stint in the Jacuzzi tub. I have nearly 100% range of motion, hand coming back quickly and can now pull the clutch in comfortably. He said I did not need PT nor do I have to come back to see him unless something changes. I should be 100% in a couple weeks, as of this morning, I can do buttons, zippers, typing, and forefinger to thumb now has a building pressure and strength.. I should be fine than the Lord above. Thanks for the messages guys, shoulders are a real bugger, have broken collar bone a couple times and by comparison, this is a little better and quicker recovery which is really weird considering what an old fart I am now versus a 20 year old maniac on two! I can live with the shoulder bump, a reminder of a GREAT ride and even finer machine,,, I LOVE THIS BIKE, now I want a Black Mamba EBR to complete my stable! |

Best exercise they had me do for my torn cuff was to stand in a doorway like you're walking through it. Take your injured-wing's palm, with your arm down at your side, and use it to push backwards against the wall outside the door jamb. Then, reverse your palm and push forwards against the opposite side of the wall. Repeat 10-15 times, do 3 or 4 sessions a day. Also, get a tennis ball/foam squeezie ball/anything round. "Walk" it up and down the wall in front of you, with your fingers and thumb, from waist-high to as far up as you can reach, and back again. Do that one to tolerance - over and over again until it starts to hurt, then stop. Come back to it a few times a day. |

You got that right. I am not sure there is a more complex joint in the body. No PT is interesting. Your injury must not be as severe as I am thinking, but then again you did say you tore all 3 ligaments and the x-ray seems to confirm that with your displaced collarbone. |

Good advice Joe.. very similar to what I have been doing, pulling in with my left was ok, pushing any weight awa was very painful...I have a squeeze ball, am getting pretty close to where it was...I work it, then into the sling and ice it down,,, then repeat. Steve.... thanks, yeah the clipper took off, but then again,, luckily so did I! lol Harlan... have more pics... can't explain it,,, just that I prayed an awful lot on the ride and I don't doubt the power of prayer... but... I took her out for a ride today... IT WAS GREAT!!!

Quite the story, Pete! Enjoyed our 1.3 hour chat today, kindred spirits... Never broken any bones but tore all the ligaments of my left collarbone chasing a calf from my parent's yard. Fell hard on my left and ripped all but the ones holding the clavicle in the center. Saw an orthopedic surgeon who told me he could do cosmetic surgery but no help with function so I passed. A year later I went back and said I wanted the surgery, "the bump" was driving me crazy. He went in, shaved 3/4" off the anterior end if my clavicle, pulled some ligament from my scapula and secured it to the clavicle with some kevlar and sewed me up. Now that shoulder has better ROM than the non-compromised shoulder. cosmetic my ass. Z |

Zak, I tend to agree with you. Those ligaments must do something. If they are torn, then something must be affected. I think it's more complicated than the doctors make it out to be... Part of my problem in assessing things, is I never did a ROM test of anything prior to my crash so I was clueless as to if the ROM after the crash was the same or worse than the pre-crash ROM. It's not something a normal person really thinks of. |
