When I go to open the gas cap, it's VERY snug, to the point where I have to put a lot of weight on my thumb pressing down on a precise part of the gas cap to be able to open it. This happens no matter the temperature. Even doing so, I'm worried I'll snap the key. Does anyone else experience this? Are there any good fixes? Side-note: where's the big oil thread? I can't find it. | ||

Yep, happened to me out at Homecoming in 2010 I was on my way to Ukes and VERY low on gas, decided to wait till I got to the dealer and ask them. They were great. Put some graphite lubricant in there and worked it slowly back and forth. | ||

Surely that's not a permanent fix though? Is it still hard to turn for you, or did the lubricant work long term? I have some moly lube I could throw on there, but I'm thinking more along the lines of busting out the dremel and grinding some metal away. | ||

Just curious if your tight gas cap is a recent development--did it function normally earlier?Does the resistance leave when you operate the lock off the bike? Could it be some form of vapor lock? I purchased an aftermarket gas cap many years ago (sans any locking mechanism) and I never looked back. Easier at the gas station because I can leave my key in the ignition as well... | ||

Its a long term fix, though I do have to lube it up every now and then (years in between) | ||

Fresnobuell - I got the bike at 20k miles and have had it the entire 5k miles I've owned it. It seems to only have resistance on the bike, and it's in the turning of the lock mechanism, so I don't think it's vapor lock |
