In common with others I have had my starter sprag clutch fail and have done the repair but thought I would post for a couple of reasons, first being that when I went to order the housing it comes up as no longer available from dealers. I am in the UK so ordered the kit from St Paul's which includes the housing and ordered the 52T gear here. Post cost was $70 and my enforced contribution to the thieving scum politicians, AKA import costs, was $120, total cost of parts is $780. Here are the photos of old and new parts and the second reason for this post.
Having a problem with photos so continued in next post. (Message edited by stimbrell on July 03, 2018) (Message edited by stimbrell on July 03, 2018) |

As you can see it is the spring holding the cams in place that has failed
So the second reason for this post is a thought occurred, what if the wear marks on the gear and housing are normal wear and tear and all that actually needed to be replaced was the sprag or if it was available, just the spring. So, if anyone has photos of these parts from a bike that has no starting problems and they look like these old parts it could save people who have this failure a lot of money.

There is no inexpensive way to resolve these Sprague failures. All three components have to be changed together. The better question to ask is why do they fail? The answer is lack of adequate oil. Please note that there is no direct oil path. It is oiled by secondary oil from the crank. |

As the housing is now no longer available replacing all three parts is not going to be an option in the future. |

You know that neither Buell, EBR or ROTAX made this part. It was made by a vendor. This is true with most of the parts used. Somebody makes this piece.......who is it? |

A good question Steve, as you may have noticed I have asked a similar question relating to the steering head bearings here and while some have had more progress than me there has never been an alternative supplier willing to supply these bearings identified, I now re-grease the bearings every time I change a tire. The bottom line is that those of us that want to keep these bikes on the road are going to have to start getting inventive. I dread the day I have to stop using this bike due to parts not being available. (Message edited by stimbrell on July 04, 2018) |

If anyone does have to remove their rotor for a reason other than a starting problem and they would be willing remove the sprag and take some photos that would be really informative. It is only six bolts and is easy to do if the rotor is on the crank when loosening and tightening the bolts. |

It is photos of the sprag, housing and 52T gear that are used but working OK that I would like to see, so I can compare them with the parts that I removed, I suspect that my gear and housing were actually just displaying normal wear marks. Your photos look like new part I think? Thanks though. |

Im in the middle of the very same. I got the bike taken apart as much as I can. Removed the Y pipe down to the muffler section of exhaust, the starter, the stator cover. My bike is in pieces. I didn't have the Rotor removal tool to continue, so I made a few notes and left the bike the way it was. |
