I performed my valve adjustment. Everything went well; I think. Put the bike together and rode for a few days with no issues. Decided to change display from Ambient Temp (AT) to Average MPH while stopped filling up the bike with gas. Left the gas station and MPH totally erratic, gear selector -- most of the time, RPM needle flashing red at 5K and odometer/trip doesn't move. The bike runs just fine!!! |

Sounds like clutch switch isn't working. Free-rev and the tach needle lights at 5k... |

I'd have to look at my CR but I believe it's on the lever perch on the handlebar. Could just be a loose wire... |

Yes it is. I went out to my bike and pulled in the clutch a few times and noticed the lack of a click. Pulled in the brake lever and the click was very noticeable. |

Check your Speedo wire from the trans to where it joins the rest of the harness. They are close to the rear header and can lay up against the header and melt. My bike was doing the same as what you describe and then finally quit, so I pulled it and had to cut out the melted part. Spliced it back together and routed it cleanly and haven't had an issue since. |

CEEJAY; you were 100% correct. I found the wire practically melted through. Zip tied it down and test rode the bike and everything worked as it's suppose to. THANK YOU!! Beer on me! |

This sounds like what my CR just started doing. I can't find the wire (can't see a wire that looks melted), do you have a pic? Also/in the meantime, Ceejay by 'quit' did your bike just stop running? I don't want to get stranded prior to finding the wire. Thanks |

On closer inspection (and searching through other posts) my horn/brake fuse is blown. I'm going to replace the fuse, but any idea how it could of been blown? I can't seem to find any worn or loose wires (but will keep looking). |

The wire is the sensor to the rear header. It comes out of the top of the right side engine case, right in front of the rear engine mount, behind the oil dip stick on that side. There's a plastic cover you will need to remove to see it clearly. I think he meant his speedo completely quit not the bike. |

Thanks. I checked mine out and the wire looks fine. I looked over all for any loose or burnt wires and didn't see any (took off fairings etc.) Prior to that, I was able to run to the auto store and replace the 10A Horn/Brake fuse. That seemed to have fixed the speedo and gear indicator issues. Hopefully this is all my issue was/is and it wasn't caused by a bad wire somewhere. Thanks again. |

@big_dog- the wire I was referring to is the actual Speedo wire, not the oxy sensor coming out of the rear header. @jjbanks- if you are looking at the clutch side, just above and to to left of the clutch housing is the Speedo sensor and it's necessary wire. It typically is routed out of the way of the rear header but especially after rotating the motor down for valve adjustments can accidentally be run close enough to the header that it will cause the coating of the wiring to melt, thus shorting the wires and causing the Speedo to act erratically or in my case shut down altogether. Hope that helps. |

My fuse blew again. So spent the afternoon looking for wire shorts and reviewing the ED manual. Can't find anything that appears to be shorted. The DTC doesn't give any codes either. Checked horn wires, and clutch sensor. When I replace the fuse it works fine, but guessing it will shorten after a run or 2. Yeah, you meant the wire coming from the VSS? It has a plastic tube covering and is zip tied to the frame. I've checked that as best I can and can't see any signs of wear. And as much as I would like to find this issue, that looks to be a bear to rewire. Could it be my ECM? Would like to find this short, dont' like the idea of driving around with out a brake signal. |
