Got an issue with my original instrument cluster. Bought her new in 08,been through everything possible with her,and this is one I haven't seen before. Cluster froze up at 65 mph, tack at 4g. Turn signals don't work. Any thoughts before I take it in. Do clusters have limited life?

I won’t through 3 speedos so far. None of the locked up, but the tach would quit working or the needle would be off by 1000 rpms.

Have you discontinued your battery to do a reboot?

Yes, it was the only way to even get it to turn off when it happened. Also pulled all fuses and everything was good. Now with key on there is no power and needle is still stuck at 4g.I got nothing at all now.

Also checked wire bundle under key, had issues with that before, all good as well.

Have you looked at the relays? I had a start relay go out and it affected the IC.

No I haven't, is there a tell tale sign to look for, or do I have to test resistance or something?

To the OP: Do you ride in the rain much or get much water on the cluster while washing the bike?

Just curious.

There are four relays in the relay box, one is a auxiliary relay that is not used. You can use it to test the other relays. I hope that helps.

When my starter relay went out, it affected the IC, but all lights and horn were okay. After it was replaced, all was okay, so don't think it's the starter relay based on what you wrote. Good luck with it.

Lately, like last 2 weeks, my tach shows I'm idling at 0 rpm. This has only happened a few times. Did it today, then after I stopped for gas it was fine. Doesn't bother me much, am getting used to electrical quirks. And I don't pay much attention to the tach anyway. After 57,000 miles I just go by feel and noise.

How hard will it be to replace the IC or is there after market fix ?

Easy to swap out. Just takes money to buy one.

$320. An expensive part to throw at a problem...

I'm afraid I need to shell out $320 myself. After washing my 1125r today, I took it for a ride to dry off, and the left blinker stayed on, could not cancel. I figured, okay...it must be the switch, so I disassembled the switch. I did manage to get it to cancel, but selecting left activated left blinker, but selecting right also activated left blinker! removed fairing, accessed connector...rang out wires looking for a short. The switch is functioning exactly as it should. Checked with power on as well. Selecting right STILL activates LEFT blinker. What else could it possibly be ?

I would let it sit in the sun all day and try it then. Sounds like you got water somewhere it shouldn't be...I always keep water off the cluster and controls as there isn't anything there that cant be wiped off by hand. Safer IMHO.

Same thing happened to me a couple of times with my 08 1125r. Wash bike, left turn signal stuck on. By next day, back to normal. I believe wires on left side under rear body work edge getting wet at connectors. After drying out some, back to OK. Wiring and connectors under rear body work surprisingly crappy.

Bman12r...Good call! I just checked the bike. Blinkers are normal again. Of course, I panicked, because I go absolutely crazy if something is ailing any of my bikes, and I ordered a new Instrument Cluster, and it arrives tomorrow. I will probably just keep it anyway....I've spent money on stupider things. Didn't think wiring towards the tail could be a factor. Still baffled...

More likely water in the switchgear

Fresno...that's what I first thought... I disassembled switch, rang everything out from both ends, with fairing off.

If anyone is looking for a cluster and doesn't mind an 08, I have one that I removed from my bike and replaced with an 09.

Ok so I'm the guy who started this thread, took cluster off and heard something rattling around, turns out that a little tiny capacitor broke off the board. Seemed like that was all that was wrong, had it reattached, however still didn't work, had to replace the cluster. I'm guessing my love for wheelies over 40,000 miles had something to do with it. Thanks everyone for trying to help me out.
