20w50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil. You can find dealers in the Buell/EBR Owner groups on Facebook. (Message edited by terrys1980 on May 07, 2018) |

All the same as long as it's full synthetic. Mobil 1 is easily found and also a good oil. |

"But I dont have a torx head bit to get the oil filter out." You own a Buell and don't have a collection of T27 torx??Lol... How about a 5/16" or 8mm socket? Nut driver? I think it's a 3/16" allen that fits tight enough for a low torque bolt like that, if you rally need it done tonight. |

I want to say air cooled bikes run hotter and are harder on oil than water cooled bikes. Not 100% sure on that but I heard it at some point. |

I see so many different opinions on this. I just want to be safe Again, this is the first oil change that I have done myself. In the past Ive used some Amsoil, Ive also used Syn3 from HD But if there are other, great options, Im open to them |

Pick whatever brand lets you sleep at night. It's hard to pick the wrong oil now-a-days. Oil is so good. Pick any oil you like as long as it's "V-twin" specific. It has additives for the shock loading of the huge rotating mass (like Zinc) and is similar to oil for Diesels. Make sure to get the correct weight for the lowest temp the bike will be ridden at. Some believe 20w-50 and nothing else, but the factory (and the manual) disagree. 10w-40 below 40*F is in the manual for your bike Personally I used straight 50 weight in my CR in Florida when it was blistering hot (Ambient above 80*f and the recommendation for the XB FWIW) It LOVED it. The valve train was much quieter, it ran much cooler and even quit puking fuel out of the overflow. |

straight 50 weight? curious as my local summer temps are ambient 35degree C/95degree F (on good days!) |

You'd surprised how 'watery' oil gets when its hot and V-twins need thick oil. Careful if it gets cold with that in the crankcase though, if it does let everything get hot before revving it up. YMMV and opinions abound, especially about oil. I figure a quieter, cooler engine, is a happy engine. |

Lowest temps would be 40s/50s Oil wont have an effect on the clutch plates? (ive seen talk of it before on here) |

Car oils can have "friction modifiers" which can have a detrimental effect on the your clutch plates. I actually have first hand experience when I had my XB. I put in some sort of car oil with friction modifiers and the clutch was slipping or stuttering (can't remember specifically as it's been 10+ year). Luckily it didn't do any permanent damage as an immediate oil change with proper motorcycle oil and the problem went away. |

I use oil with friction modifiers in my Sportster as the clutch oil is separate, put it in the 1125 by mistake and instant clutch slip. |
