I just bought an SH847 from Roadstercycle for my '09 CR, but haven'tinstalled it yet because the bike is apart for other enhancements. (The stock Ducati reg/rect had just died before I took it apart for other work) It's been entirely too long since I rode a Buell, so I did some patching and splicing and parts changing, and got the '08 rideable again. It's not roadworthy, not that it has been since I bought it, but the spill I took with it in May made it less so. I have some parts waiting to go on, and hopefully more on the way soon, but I did get it to the point where I was able to ride it about a mile on the private community roads. Voltage dropped way down...I parked it, let it cool while I charged the battery. (Near new DEKA AGM) I started it, let it idle. Voltage climbed to around 13.8. I revved it up to 3500 rpm. Voltage started dropping. I put a new tire on the back yesterday, thought I would ride it again, and watch the voltage again. Shortly after I put the battery fuse in, smoke started coming out of the subframe. Couldn't tell where... Tried several times, eventually found that the regulator/rectifier was internally grounded, overheating, and smoking the potting material. I stumbled across this RM Stator on Amazon at an exceptional price, and wondered if anyone had tried one. To clarify, it's a rectifier/regulator sold by RMStator. It looks like the original Ducati unit, same wire ends as original, only difference I can see is the wires enter/exit at a different position on the frame. Can't find any specs on it. Just says it's a "mosfet". (Message edited by Panshovevo on August 19, 2017) |

The sh847 is a great regulator. Did you do the stator and rotor upgrade already? If you haven't then your issue is probably those rather than the VR. |

I guess I didn't make myself clear. I have a tendency to get wordy. I haven't installed the SH847 yet. It's reserved for the '09 CR, if I can find something decent for less money for the '08 R model. I'm hoping to get some feedback on the RMSTATOR product. |

I bought one of the rm stators from their ebay store. It tested ok according to their specs but it did not work on my CR. I know the 08Rs are slightly different so it may work but I wasn't a fan. The 847 had been perfect in my CR |

Thanks. Not what I wanted to hear, but about what I was expecting. |

At the last minute Saturday night, when I supposedly had 15 minutes to order for Monday delivery, I pulled the trigger on this 'mosfet' OEM type rectifier/regulator from RM STATOR, sold by Amazon for $83.85 delivered. I didn't get it Monday, but it did come today. Never heard of the company, couldn't get much feedback on them, and I imagine for the price, it's a shunt regulator, but I figured for the price, what the hell? Installed it tonight. It works. No headlights in this bike at the moment, and I'm not going to run it much until I get lights in it. I don't think I'd risk something like this with a 2009 stator, but it might work out with a 2008. Guess I'll find out.. Oh yeah, it comes with the correct plugs installed, a little extra lead length, and a foil packet of silicone grease to coat the back where it makes contact with the aluminum plate. |

Mate Do yourself a big favor and re-site it When you're tucked in the riding position reach down and feel where your leg position is. Lll On my R it was totally spoiling the airflow into tflhe duct hole My thoughts are(and I've done the job to test it) that moving the RR into a good airflow position is the best thing for it. Posted on Friday, September 01, 2017 - 03:32 am: Hi Simon The only other part of the electrical system to sort is the reg/rectifier. It's tucked within the forward section of the tail extension. I've moved mine to a position under the number plate mount and combined the mounting screws with some spacers to allow airflow over all surfaces of the RR. My first RR went berserk with no damage to the new windings I had recently fitted (though it was a concern!) The problem of inadequate airflow will not go away with the install of a new mosfet RR in the existing position, (even though it is said they run cooler so you would think the original site would be OK). Trust me on that On a 1500 mile ride to Italy an other parts, a spent a fair time riding with my right leg at right angles to the bike to allow air flow back into the air intake cooling duct, as my leg obscures the duct sufficiently to cut down the air flow and cause RR over heat. This caused hi voltage( up to 17v). In my case, I sussed the problem and since re-siting the RR I have had no further issues except having to Change the cooked battery.(from previous overheat) To date, I get 14.4v on start up which falls to 13.8 or above for the most part of my riding. The obvious sign of the hi overcharge was that the LCD gauge shut down until I moved my leg position I'm sure that if I had not very quickly Sussed out the air flow issue it would have Cooked the new RR as well as the battery I don't yet know if the new position will be enough to save the new RR as it suffered overheat on 4/5 times during the holiday. I tried to watch it constantly while returning to the uk, but sometimes you have to have your eye on the road I'm off into France and Germany on the 7th for a 9 days of riding, so this should see it one way or the other. West Country windings supplied the MOSFET RR at a cost of £185 I think (I can't find the receipt) I used the Honda type connection blocks as it fried the buell connection blocks The Factory position of the RR could very well be the cause of all of the electrical faults in the charge side of the system, burnt windings included!! The original windings were being forced into a meltdown by thr RR overheat and subsequent failure, is what I'm thinking. My clocks and diagnostics all seem fine I just had a thought that my wet-weather gear was even more of an obstruction flapping around that AirDuct area! |

The RM unit is definitely a shunt type: https://adventuremotorcycle.com/news/rmstator-mosf et-regulator-kit I would be careful not to run it without a headlight, the current not going to the headlight will go through the shunt. That's a considerable amount of extra current. |

I think I might try adding cooling fins to the outer side of the mounting plate. I could do it several different ways, from TIG welding them, to flush riveting pieces of angle with a thermal transfer paste between the angle and the base plate So far, the RM Stator is working well for me. It was nice to have the correct terminals installed, and have a bit of extra wire on all of them. |

I bought the SH847 and it is over charging since day one, stock position. Worse now, gets up to 16.1v and makes my display shut off. I too was looking at this RMstator VR. With all of the glorious feedback on this marvelous VR, I'm killing myself wondering what I have done wrong. |

Wesbronco, another member posted that hooking the black and red wires as they were originally routed, instead of hooking them straight to the battery, eliminated his overcharging problem with an SH847. I haven’t tried mine yet. I pulled the motor out of the ‘09 to install an 1190 kit, then ran into a medical issue that has really put a damper on everything. It took a long time to even find a surgeon willing to deal with my problem, as most were afraid of causing infection in the hardware that reinforces my lumbar spine three level fusion. Found one who dealt with the problem immediately, and i’m 3 weeks in to a 6 week recovery period. Can’t do much of anything at the moment, but i’m highly motivated to get completely healed so the problem doesn’t come back! |
