Hey Gents, long time lurker first time registering/posting. I got a new battery for my 1125CR and was installing it, and noticed the battery terminal orientation was flipped (+ where - had been) and was slightly annoyed but didn't think it would be a big deal as I saw that I had enough cable slack to run them the other way. I was working on moving the battery cables around with the battery sitting in the bike and didn't catch that the positive cable was resting slightly against the frame and the battery post and unfortunately when moving cables around I tapped the ground cable to the battery as well, and its sparked pretty darn well. I wasn't overly thrilled with my ignorance but it was a very short touch so I was hoping I got off lucky that time. Turns out I didn't. Upon connecting the cables correctly the fuel pump started immediately and the cluster turned on, all with the key off. Yay for diagnosis time. I started by checking all of the fuses to make sure none of them were blown, and all are fine (visual and multi-meter check) I then moved to the relays and didn't get any different results if they were plugged in or not. I am having the cluster turn on no matter the key position, but cannot start the bike with the key in any position. The only way I can connect the battery without having the cluster come on is by removing the key switch fuse. I even tried as far as disconnecting the key switch plug from the harness but it would still turn the cluster on. I get a bit of noise from what I am assuming is the idle control valve as well. I am going to go unplug the voltage regulator and see if I get the same issue. I have been looking over wiring diagrams and that is kind of the last thing that I am unsure of. If anyone has more insight into the issue please let me know! I'm still hitting myself for letting something so small slide, but I really wanted to ride the bike and not have to worry about it not starting! Thanks |

I suspect you have killed the ECU and probably the cluster. Essentially everything electronic will be polarity sensitive..........very expensive mistake! |

When I've seen this happen in the past, it typically takes out the voltage regulator and the fuel pump, but if replaced it should come back to life. Some of your other symptoms make me think one or more relays were damaged too. |

The fuel pump still functions and I cannot confirm if the voltage regulator is still functioning at this point. My main goal is to track down why the cluster comes on as soon as the battery is connected. From looking at the wiring diagrams the only thing that feeds the cluster power is the key switch, am I mistaken in thinking this? If they key switch is the only thing feeding 12v to the cluster, and I unplug the key switch and still have the cluster come on I don't quite follow how that could happen. |

A lot of the cluster is controlled by the ECU via the CAN bus, pin 29 and 30 of J1. The fuel pump is directly controlled by the ECU. I suspect you have damage to both. If you have a friend with a Buell, try swapping them for a definitive answer. Good luck. |

In thinking about the ECM as the issue, am I required to replace the cluster with the same bike that the ECM came from? I see a few ads saying that it is necessary, but I believe the bike I have already had its cluster swapped, if the previous owner wasn't mistaken. |

Unplugged the ECM to see if the cluster would still turn on without the key. Cluster turns on with ECM unplugged. I also get a theft error which isn't super weird given that the ECM is not connected. |

"am I required to replace the cluster with the same bike that the ECM came from?" NO, you have 30 minutes to use "different" ECM to troubleshoot "Cluster turns on with ECM unplugged." That would suggest that you have a relay that is now shorted. Pull them one by one and see if you can isolate. |

By the way, you only have 30 minutes. Then the borrowed ECM will sync with the cluster. I can't remember, but logically I would assume that it would then sync with the higher mileage, whether cluster or ECM. |

On the subject of used ICs and mileage, if you hook up a used IC to a bike, it will display the mileage that was on the IC before. It will continue to display that mileage, plus whatever you put on the bike while that IC is mounted. One of these days, just to satisfy my curiosity, I'm going to reinstall an old IC that's been on the shelf, back on the R model it came off of, to see what it displays now that I've put about 500 miles on the bike. I'll bet it will show the mileage that was on the old IC when I took it off. |

Turns out I'm just a fool and when I jumped back from the arc I tucked the 2nd ground cable under the frame and hadn't seen it for awhile. Connected it and we are good to go. Kind of impressed that absolutely nothing saw damage. |
