Hey everyone, new to the Buell world. Came over from racing Triumph Daytona 675. Picked up a mint 1 owner 08. Remus exhaust with an Ebr race ecu.

Problem I'm seeing is this, on cold start up (roughly 40 degrees here now) bike starts, normal cold high idle around 2k rpm. Sits at the high idle mark for a few seconds and the engine just shuts off. Repeated attempts to restart (without throttle input) either nets more shut offs or no starting at all.

Now if i cold start it, give it throttle for a bit, it'll run on its own if i hold it for roughly 30 seconds.

Did tps reset to get that out of the way. Perfect readings on % and voltage.
No codes shown either.
Thoughts?
I do have video also, will try to get it uploaded asap

I'd inspect and clean the IAC, it is a stepper motor that controls the idle, attached to the throttle body and is often a culprit in regards to idle issues.

Ill check it out. But it doesn't seem to be an idle issue so much as a complete stall? Idles smooth (for a v) at 2k, then just shuts off as if i hit the kill switch.

Yep, once you take the airbox off you will see the throttle bodies, they are pretty much completely closed when you don't have any input, so nearly all the air for idle is coming through the IAC valve, and if it is having trouble holding itself at a specific amount, it likely is snapping closed causing your stall. At least that is my theory/wild ass guess for this situation. That is why if you crack the throttle a bit, it will be able to hold the idle fine.

Some have had luck cleaning them out, or disassembling and rebuilding them, so it is worth a shot at least.

Thanks for the info...ill check it out tomrrow and post back. A little added info. Attempt to start it today, cranks, backfires. Crank a few more times with throttle added, finally starts up.

Update:

Spark plug cleaning method did not help.
Pulled air box (very dirty k&n)
Pulled throttle bodies to access iacv.
Took iacv apart, it wasn't really dirty but i cleaned it,the ports in the throttle bodies, and the engine side of the throttle bodies.

Pulled plugs, a bit wet and black. I will pick up new plugs tomorrow.

With new plugs, a few things cleaned up i will report back.

One question i do have is there is a large vacuum port on the underside of the tb's that is capped. Is that from the factory?

That port is capped on the 49 state bikes, on California bikes there is a charcoal canister that attaches there.

Thanks Froggy... i will put it back together and see if there's any change. Is there anything i can test on the iacv while it's off the bike? Ohm etc?

note the pix in this post:
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/739089.html?1405463889

the hose that fits into the "base" of the air box comes very close to the throttle linkage...if it is not "seated" ( pulled up)...throttle action is affected

Update.
Took it all apart, cleaned up throttle bodies, iac, threw in new plugs while it was apart.
Start up today netted the same result. Hard cold start, stalls unless throttle is given. Lots of fuel! With air filter off, i put my thumb over the breather hose and mimiced the same result as the stalling issue. Is it possible the iac is faulty and not throwing a code?

Also to add, my tps reading is now maxing out at 83%. Tried to reset it several times with no luck. It was reading 100% before i pulled the throttle bodies off, what gives?!

Check to make sure the clamps that hold the throttle body on, are not interfering with the throttle linkage, preventing the linkage from opening the butterfly valves all the way.

Everything is tightened down. Went back and took it all apart/ reassembled just to make sure. Nothing binding etc. Throttle linkage stops on the stop tab as it should. Pulled connection off of tps, re plugged it in, now i have tps codes ofcourse lol. Will any code prevent it from being able to reset the tps?

With the air box off i cycle the butterflies manually to ensure wot. Still only seeing the 83% tps value. Trying to reset tps shows no change...

I'm going to order a new IAC with the hopes of fixing the original cold start issue.
I'm not sure what to do with the random bad tps reading

If it were me, I'd replace the TPS.

@two seasons, the tps was reading correct percentage/voltage before i pulled the throttle bodies off to inspect the IAC. Once put back on the tps started reading a much lower percentage. Its very odd to me that it wouldve took a crap in that small time frame

I had random issues with the TPS that was solved my making sure the IAC hose does not rub on the linkage, as Nuts4mc said above.

Hey TR:

I concur with making sure you IAC hose is not binding the linkage. That right there will not allow the TPS to reach a closed state needed for 0% setting at the TB's. Your ECM will not like an "almost closed" state.

Stay at it. You will find the problem!

Update.
Purchased a new IAC. Same problem persists. Hard cold start, once started will stall if throttle input is not given. Thoughts?

Also embarrassed to say i figured out the tps issue, throttle body hose clamp turned, head of clamp was actually stopping the throttle linkage. That's fixed now

a) how old is the battery?
b) have you checked the ground connections?
WASG...you are draining the reserve of the battery with your hard cold start...the ECM has a microprocessor..if the microprocessor doesn't have sufficient voltage (usually 3VDC...fed from some kind of 12vdc source that sends it thru a regulator of some kind (ask a EE, I'm an ME) to reduces the output to 3VDC) ...if it's not getting 12VDC - the Microprocessor is not seeing 3VDC...the logic in the micro processor turns off the system....when you give it throttle the engine spins faster and makes higher voltage...giving the system the required voltage needed to stay "on"...

the weak battery could also affect fuel pump performance..starving the engine for fuel

can you "see" the IAC actuate when you turn the key "on"...you may have to remove it from the throttle bodies to witness the event...wiring /connectors going to the IAC may need to be reviewed

Once the bike is running, unless there is a significant problem with the electrical system like a bad voltage regulator or ground or REALLY bad battery, the problem probably isn't a voltage problem. Unless maybe the HD hack is still on there for the stator leg relay kludge.

I never had an 1125, so I can't offer much more help than that.

I'm not sure on how old the battery is, ill put the multimeter on it while starting it and see what the readings are. It's definitely not having a problem getting fuel. It runs very very rich!

I'll check the connectors also but i don't believe those go be an issue as everything still looks new.

Thanks for the help thus far and has anyone watched the video i linked?

HD hack is a additional harness and relay used to disconnect one "phase" of the stator...the idea was that removing (electronically)the phase/leg...the stator would run cooler

12 volts is low; fully charged battery should be 13.4 approx.
