I took my '09 1125CR/R out today for a last ride before back surgery next week. Don't expect to be allowed to ride for a few months, so I wanted to make this one a good one. I headed out to the road I have chosen for speed runs, made a couple of passes to check the road, traffic, and wind conditions. All seemed good, so I opened it up. First pass didn't feel quite right, and I backed off short of my previous record. I couldn't find anything wrong other than my helmet being a bit loose, so I tightened it, and made another pass. It still felt funky, but I held it a little longer, enough to set a new record, if only by a few mph. After slowing, I continued on the road toward the nearest town. Handling was strange and getting worse. I soon recognized the familiar sensations of low tire pressure. I made it to a gas station in town, but after looking at the tire and seeing the puncture mark, didn't even bother investing the $1.50 the self service air pump required. The most likely friend was otherwise occupied, and the wife was tied up with the granddaughter, so she took advantage of the roadside assistance she got with her AMA membership, and a local pro bike hauler was there within 40 minutes, and hauled me home. |

Whoa! Things could have turned out worse! Happened to me once in MO heading towards Hannibal. Up over a ton and felt something odd. Let the S3 slow and the back end started floating around. A nearby farmer help me plug the tire and inflated. Good folks. DAve |

John - When you are healed, look into US Mile/Texas Mile group to see when a mile sprint might be near you. It ain't cheap unless you consider the alternatives. Registration and a couple of T shirts runs around 600 bucks. Comparatively, a speeding ticket of 150 in a 75 will glean you a trip to jail, loss of the vehicle to the state AND court costs... I have been clocked at 172.7 mph on my 1190RS, all in an organized event with a tech-check. Zack |

Thanks guys. Zack, I'm pretty darned careful in many ways, and use only very lightly traveled roads with good visibility and little access from the sides. Still, it is a risk, and I need to find a safer outlet for that bug. |
