Hey Guys, New to the forum, so apologies if this has already been asked and addressed. I picked up a 2009 1125R a few weeks ago, and it's a beast of a bloody bike. No dramas with it until the other night. I did the hour long highway cruise to a job, no problems. Left the bike for about five hours while I worked, then jumped back on, fired it up and started the cruise home. About 40 minutes in I noticed the headlights weren't on, and the high beams neither worked nor showed the blue icon/light on the dash. The I stopped for some food, had the bike off for maybe five minutes, then when I hit the starter button, nada. Got the thing home and tested a few things. I can get the starter motor turning, and bike started, by bridging the two heavy gauge wires going into the starter solenoid. I also got the harness coming out of the solenoid and send the ground to the frame with 10amp wire, and touching the positive to the battery with the same wire is how I'm currently starting the bike. Without messing with anything, key turns on, gauges light up fine, but ignition button only yields a single "click" from the Ignition Relay next the battery, regardless of how long you hold the ignition button. I've tried swapping it the the Starter Relay with exactly the same results. Battery voltage doesn't seem to be an issue, as it starts and runs fine every time you use the solenoid to start. Headlights immediately blow the 15amp fuse every time I replace it. I'm assuming that's just a happy coincidence and it's a short, but if it's at all connected, them I'm stumped. Same happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Turned out to be a bad bulb. Unplug the gray connector leading to the headlights. Replace the fuse and try and start it. It worked for me, and when I got home I pulled the front fairing and headlights off and found one bulb on the inside the post had touched and was causing my issues. | ||

Was your problem the same? Couldn't start the bike either, or just headlights blowing? Cheers for the advice regardless. | ||

Exactly the same, go to start and nothing but a click, notice lights are not coming on, replace fuse and as soon as I turn the key the fuse pops. I took me 4 fuses to figure it out it was a bulb. Some part of the starting system goes through that fuse that's why it won't start with that fuse blown. But will start if you just unplug the connection for the headlights behind the fairing and the fuse is good. | ||

That was it, mate. Nailed it on the head. Two headlights had blown, one had shorted. I was just blowing fuses too... never thought a bulb would stop a bike starting. Thanks for your help. |
