The front glass on the gauges of this '09 had a big crack in it when I got the bike, all the way down.
I wanted to try fix it so I got the meat out of the gauges, cut out the old glass, and cut a new piece of plexiglass and glued it in there. But now the gauges don't work right.
I think I moved the needle.

The tach doesn't work at all and the speedo is registering very high numbers that change much faster than my speed does.

I knew I was taking a chance by trying to fix the broken glass, but I'm wondering if anyone knows how I can re-set the needle, or knows any tricks, or knows of a part for sale. I see some on Ebay but two don't have a known mileage in the listing and the other is $$$.

Other than the crack, did the instruments work properly before the repair?

You might try taking it apart down to the board again, plug it in, and with the bike running, put pressure on or around the connector or various places on the IC board. Does the behavior change?

Separate question: does the needle move freely by hand?

Somebody on this board used super glue to re-plant the tach needle. Said it worked good after that.

Regarding your erratic speedo, that may be as stated above, connection issues.

You may also have a ground issue. There is a frame ground right under the steering head.

I can check the ground but the problem started as soon as I tried to fix it. I didn't knock the needle off, I bumped it to below 0. I turned it back to 0 but it still won't work, and the speedo is all messed up too.
The speedo is digital, I don't know how bumping the needle could screw up the speedo.

Bumping the needle shouldn't cause any issues. Make sure you don't have any bent pins from reinstalling it. I had to replace mine a few years back. It was showing the bank angle sensor tripped and flashed the 4 ways. Some times weird shit happens. Of course when you don't need it.

Maybe a weird suggestion, but disconnected the battery cables and wait for some time with putting them back on and see if it resets something!?

Ground at the neck was clean, cleaned it again and put it back.
I took the gauges apart again and played with the needle. Now it's even more weird:

If I DON'T put the back of the gauges case back on, the tach works (wildly inaccurate speedo). But if I put the back of the case on, no tach.

Speedo has gone crazy no matter what it says I'm doing 20 while I'm rolling the bike back and forth in Neutral.

No bent pins. No idea what I did but the thing that reads the speed is nuts now.

I checked the speedo sensor on the left side. It looks OK, not burned or anything. I checked the place where it connects into the harness. No damage, clean pins, solid connection.
Just to make sure, I jumped the ground from the battery to the frame with a jumper cable.
I disconnected the battery for a few minutes and then re-connected it, no change.

The speedo read 0 while rolling it for about five seconds, then started jumping up to 22 again.

It seems like if it was a connection, it just wouldn't work at all, or intermittently. But it does work. It just works on some crazy wrong scale. Always comes back to 0 when stationary, but off the wall when rolling or riding.
