so My bike just tipped over 19k miles, and It has started to have weird valve train noises, and it has been running choppy. I remember on my old xb, at 30k the spark plugs shit themselves, and caused similar problems, but would this also be possible with this loki motor? I know its a nooby question, but like i have said before, I'm good with the air-cooled lump, so cut me some slack : )

Surging?

Have you done the valve adjustment yet?

my HD dealer did plugs with the valve adjustment. Valves tend to tighten over time. I asked that the valves be set at the maximum of the adjustment range. When I got it back it ran much better.

There is also an upgraded 2010 timing chain tensioner. It might be a good time for that as well.

About how much does a valave adjustment run on these loki motors?

I found the problem...... Bad gas. I drained the frame, and put in fresh gas, and it ran like a top!

Fuel quality is something that should always be considered in a high compression motor, especially when ethanol is added to it.

Stations that don't sell a lot of premium fuel should be avoided when possible. The ethanol can absorb moisture from the air, and settle out of suspension with the gasoline, resulting in either a lower octane batch of fuel, or a higher than normal percentage of ethanol, which is higher octane than the gas it's blended with, but will run leaner than a proper mixture because of the lower BTU content of alcohol.

I'm not sure how much the Buell ECM can compensate for fuel quality.

I've started carrying a quantity of toluene with me when traveling on my older carbureted bikes with higher than stock compression, after aborting a trip last summer because of variations in fuel quality causing driveablilty issues I didn't understand at first.

The problem is particularly noticeable on that bike because of the stock displacement engine being coupled to an aftermarket 6 speed overdrive tranny and taller than stock final drive ratio. The bottom line is the engine is being more heavily loaded at lower rpms.

The problem became obvious on the way home, when one tankful ran superbly, and the next was so bad that I could tell the difference in the sound of the motor even before I got back on the interstate.

Glad you got it worked out.
How old was the gas?
