I've got a 2008 1125r with 20K miles.

On my last quarter mile home I could hear a dry-clutch rattle coming from my bike that's pretty nasty at idle. The sound is coming from the left side of the bike. When I squeeze the clutch it goes away like a light switch. The bike runs just fine with no other anomalies. Those of you who've had the rotor nut come loose could you let me know if the clutch making the noise go away is consistent with your experience?

I did find that the oil was really low and I topped it off with fresh Amsoil. The noise didn't change at all after the oil was added, and I didn't want to run it longer than I had to. The noise a rough clacking.

This is my commuter so I'll need to fix this asap. This will be a DIY as the bike has no warranty and I'd like to be the one doing the job anyway.

Good times.

This is common, my 1125 does it, too.
A good example of the noise, but exaggerated, is the EX500, holy shti! My VFR800 did the same thing and it's common with lots and lots of bikes. IMHO it's not broke so I'd leave it.

Somewhere on this forum someone else is describing the very noise you are, but claims it's coming from the rear cylinder, I'm dubious because his noise goes away when the clutch is pulled in.

I got nothing for you at the moment but some follow up question that might help hone in on it more. Probably a little harder to tell while riding but does it have the same noise while in gear with clutch out or does it only do it while in neutral with clutch out? Does it do it in any/all gears? Does the noise go away with clutch in no matter if it's in gear or neutral?

Grab a broomstick or piece of wooden dowel and cup a length of it to your ear (redneck stethoscope..). Touch the end of the broomstick/dowel to various parts of the left crankcase and see if you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

The noise does occur in gear as well as neutral. Lower rpms seem to be louder but that's hard to validate because of the exhaust noise. The sound seems to be more or less coming from the drive pulley area but can't pin it for sure. It's very clearly the left side though.

It sounds like a pissed off hot Ducati until you pull the clutch then it's a purring Austrian American again.

hmm... I was thinking about this more over the weekend and the cush drive (in the front drive sprocket) popped in my head as a possible cause but that doesn't reconcile with it being noisy in neutral. Might be worth a look but I think it's a long shot.

Noise at idle in neutral is normal.

I would advise you to check your sump screen on the bottom of the engine at your next oil change. 5 screws. You'll need to drop the exhaust to access.

Oil change with screen inspection is getting done as soon as the Amsoil gets here. Will post results.

What are the symptoms of a malfunction there?

Alright, after reading a bunch of threads related to the sprag clutch issue I'm not sure it applies to my problem. Will a sprag clutch failure of any kind stop making noise when you pull the clutch? My bike starts just fine even with the seven year old factory battery. There are no weird noises during starting either.

I'm going to start with the oil screen inspection. If nothing alarming is found there, I'll remove the front pulley and inspect the cush drive. If everything in the pulley looks good, i might take off the clutch cover for shits and giggles. Because I really don't want to split the cases on my daily driver if I don't have to.

If it all goes pear shaped and I have to split the engine open, I'll be starting in the transmission. The sound is coming from the front pulley area/ transmission area. No doubt about that. I can feel the knock on the case with my hand when it's happening.

My luck it'll be a shift fork or something.

thx for all the input guys.

I dont think you have to split the case to get to the spray, if that's what you are referring to.

Nah I was referring to the shift forks/gears.

OK.... so after another run using a hillbilly stethoscope to locate the sound, I'm pretty sure it's my clutch chattering. The exhaust exits there and it's loud. That made it harder to tell if there was any sound on the right side. Once I got the broomstick stethoscope on the job it was pretty obvious. It's very close to what the bad clutch in my '07 STT sounded like.

When I change the oil( as soon as the oil gets here), I'm still going to check the oil pump screen and the deposits on the magnet. The clutch is going to come out and I'm going to put a caliper on the plates to see of they're in spec. I'll also be looking for any damage to the basket, etc.

Thanks to all who've helped out. I'll post all results and outcomes here as they occur.
