I know there are a lot of old threads regarding the questions about the tank bags, but I recently picked up my bike and would like to get something small for the tank. I know other have said they use a backpack, but those would be too restrictive to my shoulders and would like to keep my arms free. I also saw a collapsible tail bag that mounts over the passenger cover, but I don't think that would hold up if I put stuff in it with the soft sides. I was looking at the area under the windscreen and it looks like something could be made to use that space too like a glovebox type storage. I need a place to put my regular glasses and phone and maybe some small items. Thanks Jeremy |

Nelson Rigg has several "solutions"...note the "tank" is not metal so magnetic mounts are out (Nelson Rigg makes both types)...I use a strap type...one drawback is it must be "folded back" to gain access to gas cap...I use the front two air box cover screws as anchor points for the straps ( cut or drill holes with a hot knife or heated nail) . go here: https://www.nelsonrigg.com/luggage/cl-series.html pictures of my set up:
too big???...I would go to my local Walmart/target and search through the Camera department for a small camera bag or lens bag that you could attach with some industrial strength Velcro....or try a bicycle shop ...I have used some of this brands product on my dirt bikes for holding tools/tow ropes: http://www.jandd.com/bikes.asp (Message edited by nuts4mc on May 26, 2015) |

I like that setup and how you secured it to the front...curious how you did the rear of the bag. is there someplace to strap it to under the seat? Has anyone ever tried the suction cups from this company or any others? Curious how well they would work and keep the bag in place. Also does it restrict viewing of the gauge (not that I look at it very often now)? I am also worried about damaging the cover too (guess I'm anal about keeping it in great shape)? Thanks (Message edited by germblast on May 26, 2015) |

1) under the seat there is a cross member on the sub frame to anchor the rear strap(s)...this version only has (1) strap in the back 2) I wouldn't trust suction cups...it's a sport bike...it vibrates it accelerates it brakes hard...not to mention you may be using some "body english" going into to corners. 3) Viewing of the IC is no problem 4) the bag has a neoprene pad it sits on works well...but it's not perfect...you could try and use some 3m automotive "film" on the tank before you add the tank bag...you bought the bike to ride it! |

Thanks for the info, I agree that I bought the bike to ride and I'm going to ride the hell out of it. I will take a look for that 3M stuff. Your bag doesn't look too big either, which size is that one? I like either the CL-1025 Sport Tank Bag or the CL-2015 Journey Sport Tank Bag. Jeremy |

I also use a similar Nelson Rigg set up. My issue with it is that it's just too damn small! It's barely able to fit my heated liner and gloves when I take them off during a ride when the day warms up. It's not really possible to put a larger bag there because of the small size of the airbox. Also, anything that touches the tank WILL scratch that tank! I eventually settled on an aerodynamic backpack. |

Nuts4mc, modern suction cups work. I've used the Nelson Rig suction cups and they work better than any strap system ever. It has FOUR anchor points which is way, WAY better than three points. Most importantly, the suction is really strong. Just make sure the surface is clean for the cups to adhere to. They stay put even in high winds and a heavy tank bag. The cups are so strong you really have to try hard to pry them off. They have these small tabs you pull on to remove them. Without those tabs you may need a screw driver to pry them off! |

Rouge...must admit I'm old...a Velcro kinda guy...only use the suction cups on my radar detector on my touring mount...even then I get a little nervous when the road gets rough (and the detector starts bouncing around) ...do they ( Suction cups) leave any marks ( rings) in the paint?...I've had magnetic bags for years but had them blow off in high cross winds...luckily my arm stopped the bag from exiting the vehicle...not fun. jer- it the tank bag with side pockets ( the 2015)...you may be able to get the 3m stuff from this guy ( he's local to me)... http://www.thetankslapper.biz/ (Message edited by nuts4mc on May 26, 2015) (Message edited by nuts4mc on May 26, 2015) |

I use Protect All on my airbox EVERY TIME I put my tank bag on my Buell. This ensures a clean, smooth surface for the cups to hang on to. They do NOT leave a mark even after a full day of hard riding. I can assure you from extensive use of Nelson Rigg's suction cups (they are not generic cups, they came with the bag), they stick for dear life. The tank bag does NOT slide around. It's like there's a giant, wet snail attached to my tank! LOL! Those radar detector suction cups, well...they SUCK! LOL! They're low, low quality and degrade quickly over time. I wouldn't trust them. Also, they hang on upside down on your windshield. More pressure working against them to let go. The Nelson Rigg tank bag suction cup mounts has the bag sitting ON a surface. So gravity does not work against them. |

Thanks Rogue for the info and pic of your set up...I do like the looks of the cups over the straps...seems cleaner. Not sure which direction I'm going for storage, but thanks everyone for the feedback and information. |
