I was talking to a friend who does welding/fabrication for a local H-D race shop, and we got around to the subject of modifying my stock exhaust to release a bit more thump in the auditory department. I'm really not trying make it super loud since my girlfriend rides pillion often and I like to be able to talk at stops--if it's equal to or a bit under my old Barker's exhaust in volume, I'll be happy.

Even though it weighs quite a few pounds, I decided to keep the stock look and just gut the rear-most partition in the can which basically dumps the 2" header pipe into the last chamber and outlets. Probably how most guys have done theirs, including Dean's KEDA MT-1. I was going for the same outcome. With radiused turn-outs, straight slash-cuts, ovaled-out tips all been discussed, my friend ended up wanting to showcase some weldment skill with a pair of 2" stainless steel pie-cut turn-outs in the stock location. I'll never turn down nice TIG work!

It's still a work in progress--I might get the can back tomorrow (Memorial Day)--but it's looking cool so far and I can't wait to hear it.

I have to go to a store that's open tomorrow and find some high-temp black paint, I'm thinking semi-gloss since it'll be easier to wipe clean... matte finish, though it looks slick, always gets crudded up with dirt and grim. I don't always feel like scrubbing it that attentively.

I also just put the wheels back on with brand new Pilot Road 3 tires front and rear. Pretty far out tread pattern, and I'll appreciate the additional mileage I'll get out of them compared to the old Pilot Road 2s I had on previously.

Looks like good work. I'd be interested in seeing any more internal shots of the muffler if you had any!

I put pilot road 3's on my CR and have been very happy with them. Neat looking tread pattern and wear seems to be great. I've got at least 3k miles on them and have negligible wear so far.

Thanks, seasons!

Just a suggestion, don't hack away too much in there. Just taking out those 2 smaller pipes that go to the outlets makes a big difference in the way the bike sounds. Also, the more you remove, the more it will upset the stock tuning, causing it to run a bit lean.

I guess I'll stock up on my favorite ear plug then, Dean haha. Internal work's been done and sealed up, gutted, including the removed rear-most partition.

An EBR ECM will be going in as soon as I can get my mits on one.

Yeh you have to be very careful about going too deep into that or it will run like shit. Basically all you can safely eliminate is the last chamber. I hollowed out the last chamber in mine and welded on Corvette exhaust tips. It sounded like a Moto GP bike and had huge power increase.

Just got off the bike after its maiden voyage with the new tires, high bars, and modified exhaust: a renewing experience with the CR : ) The high bars are so much more comfortable over a longer ride, and low speed maneuvering is going to take some getting used to. There's a lot more leverage on the bars now, so much less steering input is necessary to move the bars the same amount than with the clubman bars installed. It's a good change, though: steering feels light and confident. I'm freakin' stoked!

The Pilot Road 3 tires have a lot rounder profile than the Diablo III or even the Pilot Road 2, but if I get the extended mileage out of them and they are just as sure-footed, I'll be happy.

The modified exhaust sounds great and rides great——seems the stock fuel map is just fine. We ended up cutting out everything from the rear-most compartment, eliminating the small wall/partition at the rear of the can. Now the exhaust tips feed directly into this hollowed chamber. Everything in front of that point is completely untouched from stock. The sound is much, much deeper: it lobs over each revolution, being about the same sound level as my Barkers can without the dB killer. Fantastic.

The cellphone mount works great, as well, so now I have GPS. : D

PICS and VIDEO after work and a ride with the GF! Which reminds me, I have to search for local upholsterers and see if they can do something with my stock pillion seat to make it more comfortable for the girl...

I have the firebolt touring pillion. Bought it for my wife but she only rode a couple of times and decided to get her own bike. I bought it off another forum member. I believe it cost me $250 when I got it and if you want it, I can let it go for that plus shipping.

The ceramic coated factory race exhaust on my xb12s looked alot like that. Made me cringe every time I looked at it. Imo it was one of the most awesome exhausts made

Ride along. Sorry for the shake... I thought the rigid-mount RAM stuff would vibrate through too much and it did, especially on a cell phone. It has a 60fps mode that could be cool, I'm going to try that next (before I can get a GoPro or something equivalent (are they still the best or just overpriced now?)
