Hey all, my 08 R keeps blowing the 15 amp fuse when I try to start the bike. I am not a mechanic and don't have an understanding of the electrical components of my R. I do all of the upgrades (exhaust, brakes, brake levers, grips, pegs, hydraulic clutch, led light) but electrical is beyond me. What simple possible fixes (if any) can you guys suggest? Will a bad relay cause the fuse to blow? Thanks for any and all input. | ||

Contacts in the ignition switch may have come apart, that is, the wiring has disconnected from the discrete (single) contact(s) area. Take apart the ignition switch and check. There is a direct short to ground somewhere. If it's in the ignition switch, when you push the normally open starter switch, then this would complete the path to ground for the starter circuit. | ||

I know for my 08 1125r I was having issues with my 30 amp fuse blowing and it was a bad voltage regulator, maybe investigate that... | ||

^^"...when I try to start the bike."^^ I should have asked you what you mean by that. If you do the routine like I do, you set the ignition switch to ON, then engine stop/start to RUN, then push the starter switch to engage the starter. Is it the ignition fuse that is blowing when you push the starter button? | ||

Thanks guys. Yes, after I turn the key to the run position, I then flip the start/stop switch to run. It is at that point the fuse blows. I don't even get to push the start button before it blows. | ||

Sorry, the fuse actually blows when I turn the key to the on position. It doesn't matter if the start stop switch is on or off. | ||

Pull the ignition switch apart. You should also check how the ignition switch harness routes around the fairing stay. The harness can become frayed there. | ||

Hi guys, this seems to be a common problem. I'd like to do preventative maintenance on mine to guard against this, but it's still unclear exactly what wears, and where. I've had my fairing and headlight off and inspected the switch area carefully. Are there any pics on the web of wires with a worn jacket? Thanks. | ||

Is one of your headlight bulbs burnt out? That happened to me where the bulb burnt out but the wires in the bulb fused together causing my fuse to blow constantly. left me stranded with no spare fuses. Could be the issue or not. but its a quick check | ||

Well, I found a few wires (don't ask me what they go to cause I don't know) that were rubbed and exposed. It looks like I will have to start opening up the wire harnesses =( . Barton, I will definitely look into the headlight tonight when I get home. Thanks for the tip. |
