Went out for a normal jaunt today on an open road trying to bed in new EBC pads on my new finned rotor and this ended up happening. <img> <img> In the second picture the clutch cable is on the right, thats looking down between the header pipes on to the clutch cover assembly. The crack is about 4 inches long. The bike spewed probably 90% of its oil coasting down the road until I got to that intersection. No warnings, the bike didnt misbehave or anything in the 30 miles before it happened. Wasn't riding too aggressively, rolled on the throttle out of a corner and heard it splutter. Thought my slip-on had come off(its done it before) but saw oil gushing out of the motor and pulled over. Cut it and coasted to a stop. Clutch still operates, bike still rolls. The motor still revved and kept running, I didnt hear metal crunching around, it was just down on power right after it happened before I cut it. Here's to hoping its just the cover and nothing serious but something obviously broke the cover unless it's a stress crack. I'll have to wait until the HD dealer pulls the cover off to find out. Bike has 13000 miles on it. 7000 of them are mine. Might be time to buy that crossplane R1 I've been looking for... I'll keep this thread up-to-date. I'd hate to see this bike go but with how its been for the past 2 years its at the crossroads of more time in the shop or in pieces in my garage then rolling down the road. Sure was nice just sitting there looking at it for an hour waiting for the rollback though. |

I'm fine. I didn't drop the bike or anything. Just got some oil on my boot. Couldn't have happened at a better spot. If I'd gone another route there's a good chance that I would have been in a hard corner or two when it would have happened and with the amount of oil I would have easily dropped the bike. Scariest part was trying to back it off the rollback and sliding on the oil left from one of the cars he'd hauled earlier today. I already looked around for parts. Prices are in the $350-$500 range just for the cover assembly. I'll wait to see what the damage is on the inside of the motor before I go ordering anything. I see this happened all the way back in April so maybe you've sussed this out. It hasn't been mentioned yet in this thread, but this is at least the third time I've seen this type of crack on this forum. It's more complicated than needing a new engine/clutch cover. That Crank shaft nut needs to be re-torqued (replaced?) and that implies the engine locking tool. Plus if it was my bike I'd inspect the other side of the motor and make sure everything else associated with the crank is still in good order. This failure is my worst nightmare with my 1125. Ugh.. I have the crank locking tool from installing the EBR rotor and a new stator last spring so that's a non-issue. Got a new cover from Shawns as offered in this thread so I really appreciate that. Unfortunately... The Harley dealer cracked open the motor yesterday and into today to find that the nut had come loose as expected. The service rep paused for a bit before he laid this one on me though. I guess in the subsequent events while the nut was off it mangled up the threads on the end of the crank and even with a new nut it's a no-go to get it back together. They suggested either a $40 die and trying to fix the threads on the crank or tearing the motor the rest of the way down and putting in a new crankshaft. As it stands the shop is 8 hours into it and I'm guessing the offer I got to trade it in for about $1500 is gonna get thrown out the window since they want to put a new crank in it. I'm tempted to say F it, order the 1190 kit and throw money at the thing and build a killer bike but the finances aren't there at the moment. I'm guessing not too many people have a spare 1125 crankshaft lying around for cheap either. Decisions decisions. |

Good to know about how cheap cranks are... I was expecting $1000-$2000. Didn't know that EBR had folded. Looks like its a rough time for the folks in Wisconsin. Went and looked at the bike today in the shop and the threads on the crank don't look too bad. I've seen way worse. Told the shop to order the die, fix the threads, get the nut back on it, bolt everything back up and call it done. There's plenty of good thread left, only the first two were messed up making it hard to get the nut back on. Shouldn't hurt the holding power on the nut. Saw a Uly in the parking lot at the dealer. I was jealous. lol |
