I picked up a pair of 6-piston calipers from a '95 FZR1000 for my Vmax--they bolt right on--but the rubber dust seals on a couple of the pistons are in poor shape. (The fluid seals all appear to be in good shape, as do the pistons and the bores. The calipers themselves are in decent aesthetic shape, but not great.) I'm going to buy a rebuild kit and might want to separate the two-piece caliper so that the bores are easier to get to. Is there anything I need to be careful for when separating the calipers? When I'm done, do I just bolt them back together, or is there anything special that need to be done? (Why did I post this here instead of the Vmax forum? I figure you guys are a lot more likely to have disassembled calipers than they are. And hey, the ZTL2 is a 2-piece caliper, so any wisdom for my FZR calipers ought to translate to the 1125 calipers too! |

no big deal. i usually loosen the bolts that holds the halves together about 5 turns ea and tap the boltheads with a hammer and aluminum punch to start the separation. clean halves and replace all seals and rubber parts. i usually wet all rubber and sliding parts with brake fluid, reassemble, bleed and enjoy. have fun, tim |

Thanks, Smoke. I assume there's no gaskets that go between the two halves of the caliper? Any idea on torque spec, or is "pretty tight" with some blue thread lock probably good enough? |

Flesh, on the older 2 piece calipers there was an oring around a fluid passage between the halves |

Torque: It's 18 lbs or so -- pretty tight considering you are also going to put blue on there. BTW, I changed out my fasteners eons ago to an ordinary socket cap and washer. |
