One of the captive fasteners used by a bolt holding the faux "gas tank" in place is rotating with the bolt. Only solution I can think of is to dremel the head of the bolt off..very carefully. Anyone run into this problem have a better solution? Thanks. | ||

Of course this can happen, but it would help if we new what bolt and the type of captive fastener you are talking about. There are a myriad of different types from Tinnamen nuts to rivnuts. Solutions can vary depending what type you are talking about and ultimately access. | ||

Stevel there are only 4 bolts holding the air box cover on 2 that screw into the gas tank/frame and 2 that use the threaded spring clip that are by the seat. Leroysch When one of mine spun I drilled the head of the bolt as I didn't trust my hand with the dremel. | ||

Kruizen...thanks. Got fixated on the small gap that exists between the bolt head and cover as the place to attack, your idea is much better. | ||

And if you scar the airbox cover....it's the same as any XB. Readily available. | ||

Thanks Ratbuell, I didn't know that. Unless I make a total abortion of it, any minor "ooops" will just add character IMO. Still have a small dent in the front fender of an FLHX due to a glancing blow with a deer. Makes for a good story! Funny thing is this was prepping for a stator replacement. I'm trying not to take this as a portent of things to come. | ||

might try a set of side cutters(dikes) to apply pressure to the gap between screw and tank cover. sometime it works and sometime the nutsert pulls out of the plastic that it is captured in. if it pulls out, take the tank cover all the way off, unscrew the nutsert and jb weld it back in the plastic. have fun! tim | ||

Just had the exact same thing happen to me after only a full turn of the machine screw: I stuck the tip of a flat screwdriver in between the airbox cover and Torx screw head/plastic washer, then twisted it to pull the captive spring clip against the inside of its mount, holding it still. Took a few tries as turning the screw to remove it displaces where the screwdriver is under the head, but it worked. | ||
