Does anyone in the San Diego area have suggestions on shops they trust to perform tire installations without mangling wheels? Another criteria would be a shop that knows what balancing marks on wheels and tires mean. :-)

Oceanside cycle supply has changed a bunch of buell tires for me over the years. Family owned local shop in o'side.... Cheap too. Like 22.00 a tire off the bike

Poway Cycle in Poway,
http://powaymotorcycle.com/SanDiego/
Stark's Cycle near the MCAS base on Miramar (across the street from the air museum)
https://www.starkcycles.com/
Lee's Cycle (Jeremy Toye's shop) on Aero Drive off I-15
http://www.leescycle.com/

you'll have to call them for pricing
Poway used to do mine for under $20...

slight thread jack...

Does anyone do the tire changes themselves? Simple static balancer and weights? I've thought about this as more and more of the local shops are either $$ or jerks about it. Or take forever to "squeeze you in"...

Thanks for the references. I'll be making a few call once my tires arrive.

Ron, you say "used to". Do you do it yourself now, or are you referring to the current down status of your 1125?

...I've looked into it
the hot set up seems to be a harbor freight changer with their MC adapter, but the deal breaker for me was you must buy the "pole" from No-Mar:
http://www.nomartirechanger.com/product_p/tc-mdbar -std.htm
it saves your rims...
the "cycle hill" unit from No-Mar is on sale for $365 ( +freight...it include the pole) http://www.nomartirechanger.com/product_p/tc-cycle %20hill%20standard.htm

some mount them to big pieces of ply wood...the best set up I believe is to weld a square tube at a 90 degree angle to the "up right" on the changer that will fit into the receiver on your hitch mounted to your tow vehicle....
http://www.wikco.com/mc110.html
(scroll down for pix)
as for balancing there seems to be several similar type "stands" available to static balance the wheel

last time I had a tire mounted it cost about $25....( $365/$25= 14 tire changes)...even with multiple bikes, the ROI isn't there yet for me...if I was a track day junkie...might be the way to go.

NooBuel -I used to use Poway for a "turn key purchase" - I would pull the wheels and Poway would purchase the tires...I believe he would give me a "deal" on the cost of tire change & balance. ( I'm retired now and spend my time looking for deals)...last time I needed tires changed ...Poway left for Laguna...I used
Stark's...$25 a Wheel + disposal

UPDATE: Whatever you do, do NOT use Lee's Cycle. They damaged BOTH of my wheels, one section probably 8-10" of rash like the tool was dragged across the edge of the wheel during bead seating, and the technician did several things to aggravate the situation.

1. He tried to carry the wheels out and place in the car before I had a chance to inspect them. Presumably trying to hide it and then when I left and later discovered they could claim I had done it.

2. After I called him out on the damage he tried to claim "Oh, it said they were already damaged on the work order." I informed him that that was not the case, and that even if it did say that that the work order had been forged. He then fumbled trying to pull it up in the computer to show me, which he was never able to do. No matter, as I have two of the sheets of the original carbon paper work order which are both absent any indication of damage . . . since there was none.

After a bit of discussion and my insistence that the damage was inflicted at their shop the technician agreed to write out a statement that they would be responsible for replacing/repairing the wheels. I am currently waiting for a call from the shop owner to verify that he is going to honor the statement written and signed by his employee before I spend any money to replace the wheels. They MAY yet correct the harm inflicted, but a shop that is willing to try and hide damage they cause and escape responsibility until they are called out is a shop that should NOT be trusted.

UPDATE #2:Talked to the owner, who apparently was the guy I spoke to originally in person, that I thought was an employee. He informed me that he spoke to the tech that actually did the work, and he fessed up to causing the damage. The owner agreed to cover the cost of replacement as long as I bring him the damaged wheels. So he is correcting the damage, but the whole situation is irritating.}

Did it just chip the powdercoat? Or was the metal damaged?

I do my own tire changes, and even when treating the Buell Wheels like fine china, I murdered that powder coat in several places. It seems like it will pop off just looking at it. Happened with an 05 XB9SX and an 07 Uly.

Damaging the metal is a different story, that is a serious screw up.

Noobuel -- Its not terribly uncommon on the Buell rims to get scratched, sounds like you got a pretty extreme run which was probably caused by a lack of attention.
Being that they are painted and not powder coated it is very susceptible to it. I know a really great shop in Texas (Which I am no longer near there I'm closer to you in the OC) and they nicked my rims the first time through. Not out of negligence but just bad luck on my part.

Bummer deal for you though.

Heh, one of you says paint, the other powder coat. I was under the impression it was powder coat. But in any case, it is well beyond the paint/powder.

The front wheel looks like what happens to a car wheel when it is curbed. The metal has been ground down for several inches as the wheel was rotated. The rear looks like a tool was dropped or swung into it in several places putting gouges in the metal well deeper than the surface color material.

I'm glad that the owner is stating he will cover the cost, hopefully when I take him the invoice he does ACTUALLY cover it. However, it leaves a really bad taste the way it was initially handled, first trying to hide it, then trying to shift blame/responsibility.

Noobuel, I'm sorry to hear about your rims getting gouged. I've had my own issues with a few shops around San Diego.

I took my front wheel to Lee's and they gouged it. I was so pissed I left yelling. I didn't even want to deal with them trying to fix it. (When I had my XB.)

When the rear tire needed replaced, I took it to NKB because a lot of guys on base recommended them. They didn't gouge the rim, but they took off about 6 inches of the paint. As soon as I started to raise hell, they asked if I would be happy with a free tire and mounting and balancing. I agreed, but only because I was furious. They refunded my money on the spot. (Again, the XB.)

Since then, I have pulled the wheels and taken them to Cycle Gear. I have never once had an issue. They write down any and all defects before they let me leave. I painted the small nicks before I took it in, so anything they did would be easily identifiable. They have always been pretty good to me.

Again, I'm sorry about the way they did you wrong. Shady.
