Well I seem to have a few problems at once this being one of them the fuel consumption dropped to 17 mpg while just on tick over the fumes smell a bit of petrol but not 100% sure by the way the fumes are coming out like a kettle boiling

Have you got a leak in the fuel line that's hitting a hot motor?

Not as far as I can tell it's coming straight out the crank breather

I think you may be looking at the petrol tank vent.

You say crank breather. That connects to the bottom of the air box. I just want to make sure you're referring to that and not the fuel tank breather that runs back to the left passenger foot peg (on my US bike anyway). It should be easy to trace the fuel tank breather once you get the air box cover off.

If there's enough oil in the motor and there's no obvious fuel leak, I'd consider a compression check. A 17 mpg average is pretty bad, but I'm not sure what you mean by "while just on tick over". However, I wouldn't expect things to be working right if you have severe stator or battery problems, so you might want to check those out first.

Check your oil level. If it it overfilled that can happen.

Did this just start out of the blue or did it follow service or other work?

How many kilometers on the bike? Giving more information would help give a better guess on what is happening.

Pull the dipstick to check the level and smell it. You could be getting gas in the crankcase too, which could result in a crankcase explosion if the fuel dilution is getting high.

Check the oil level. If it is overfull and smells like fuel you may have an injector that thinks it is a firehose, which is washing down the rings, thinning the oil, and creating too much crankcase pressure.
