When I had my CR's valves adjusted a year or so ago the mechanic said all but two were within spec. I have read here and heard similar from others that valves generally tighten up. Is that the case? If valves tighten up, wouldn't it be prudent to have each valve set to the loosest possible setting withing the spec range? |

Dan, when I did my first valve service, I replaced two shims because they were too tight. I also replaced 4 others to get them closer to the loose spec. They were technically still within range, but I wanted to loosen them up a little bit. On the second service, I replace one that was too tight, and replaced three more to bring them back to the middle. Next service will include installation of the big bore kit, so all valves will be shimmed to the loose side. When the next one rolls around after that, I'm pretty sure they'll all be in spec with no replacements needed. Rogue Biker just did his third service and didn't replace any of his shims. A lot of it is because of how you ride, how hard you are on the engine, etc. Rogue tends to ride quickly, but he's not near as hard on it as I am to mine. YMMV |

A lot of it is ride style/preference. The engine runs slightly different with loose valves. On my last inspection all valves were within spec, with two being on the tight end. I had an emergency family problem and had to move my bike quickly, and couldn't wait for my shim kit to come in. It sucked, but I knew I was going to have to put the bike back together, ride it to where I had to go, and tear it apart again. I emailed EBR about my situation and asked if it would be ok to ride a small distance. Their response was actually better than I expected. I could ride it all I wanted, but just needed to move my next valve service up a few thousand miles. So its on hold til winter. I don't expect to put another 5k on this season with everything going on. |

As Dhays1775 mentioned, on my 2nd valve inspection, I adjusted all the valves to the lose end of the spec. At 36k miles, I did the 3rd valve inspection and all the valves were in middle spec with a couple being nearer lose, and a couple more closer to tight. I didn't bother adjusting any valves at this time. My riding is usually under 8k RPM. In fact 90% of the time I'm under 7k RPM. Since I commute a lot on the bike, Í can't really get it beyond 6k too often because before long I'll be 20 over the speed limit! The only time I get 7k or above is when I'm out on a sport ride once or twice a month or so. So the engine is rarely working hard with me. |

THX! I will now instruct the dealer to set loose on my next service. I am now sure that 'within spec' is not good enough. I have been working my way up the rpm range over the years. 7,000 rpm's for more than a few seconds is all but impossible in an urban environment so I set my personal record on the 6th of July. On a long wide almost empty 4 lane highway rolling through the hills of wheat fields I held 7,000 rpm's in fifth gear for quite a while trying to keep my friends ZXR1400 in sight. The uphill smooth gentle sweepers at 105 mph were just fine! |
