So I did my whole electrical system, and now my starter hangs. I hold the button in and it'll crank a few times, then makes mechanical noise, then cranks a few times, etc until it fires. I have to assume this came after installing my rotor since it's attached to the sprag clutch. Any ideas? I never actually took the sprag clutch off, just the rotor which was then replaced then tightened down using the green loctite stuff. I've pretty much accepted that I'm going to need to tear into her again, but I honestly don't know what I've done wrong. |

Chance at seeing a video? It would be extremely hard to mess the sprag up unless you did something really funny. It is aligned when you torque down the six shoulder bolts. The bike is obviously running, so the sprag isn't binding in the wrong direction. If you reached the right torque on the rotor nut, then its fairly safe to assume the sprag is fully contacting the starter gear. Long story short, unless the sprag has become defective, or was not handled well, its probably not your problem. |

Hmmm does it do it all the time? |

Uh, I did not lube the rotor cover, however I have no problems with the battery draining. i've started it no less than a dozen times since the swap... |

Just about every time, unless it catches right away. |

I updated my post after I reread it. My first thought was wrong. I thought your post said that it wouldn't even turn over. Sorry. However I would like to see a video if you can get one. |

Same at a full charge? Try triggering the starter manually from the relay to eliminate the switch. Could be the relay itself. You could try jumping the terminals. |

I should get a vid of it. Maybe tomorrow. And yes, at full charge it happens. Timeline is as follows: Starter works always every time, I replace rotor/stator/battery/regulator/plugs, now makes mechanical noise, yet starts every time albeit taking a bit longer than usual. |

Sounds like the sprag. Did you lube the bearing with a little oil when you put it back together? You said you use the green 648 lactate. Was this for the bolts that hold the sprag to the rotor or the nut to hold the rotor? If the sprag is not free rolling when the bike starts your going to have the starter hand up. Like wise wight he starter. (Message edited by Shawns on July 15, 2014) |

I didn't lube the bearing no... I'm not sure which bearing you're talking about. The sprag never actually came off. Just the sprag bolts and rotor nut off, then the rotor swap, then the sprag bolts with green 637, then finally the rotor nut went back on with the correct high temp red I forget the specific number. |

The sprag clutch is what bolts to the rotor. The bearing inside it spins freely one way and locks when the starter engages. From the sound in your video it seems not to be releasing properly. The bearing inside it is replaceable. I have a spare sprag clutch assay if you it is the issue and you have trouble locating one. I would start with a meter and see what your starter is doing. Make sure it's maintaining voltage during crank. Since your pulling it apart anyways, see if it is disengaging when you release the starter button and that it moves freely by it self. |
