So my "fix" on my 08's ignition switch didn't hold. I just soldered in extensions on the wires while it was still on the bike. Quick easy and efficient. Problem was that one of the solder joints was too fat to fit back through the switch housing. Pulled it out again. So things around here have been really hectic. My father passed away last week after a long fight with COPD. It was unexpected. He was given 3-5 years about 6 months ago. We were all taken off guard. Naturally, because he was given more time, he hadn't gotten anything in order yet. So I've been dealing with that for the past week. My R is one of my primary modes of transport. Chances are, you'll see me on it if you live in the area. I do have 2 other bikes, but they are show pieces. Taking them out involves a lot more effort (they're both kickers too). I called harley to see what they would want to fix my R. $212. Again. $212. They said it would take 2.5 hours. I started working about 20 mins ago. Here I am typing this, switch in hand, soldering gun heating up. That's right. 20 minutes to do what they said would take over an hour. Screw them. Thanks for reading my rant. You didn't have to. |

Very sorry to hear about your Dad, Chris. Good luck with your repair. Get it back on the road soon. I don't know how I would have gotten past my Dad's passing if I hadn't had a bike to ride to clear my mind on a regular basis. |

Sorry for your loss fella. Some dealerships suck. That's a 1/2hr to an hour fix at most. I don't know if they work flat rate or not. |

Thanks guys. I appreciate you reading my rant. I was just livid last night when I found out how much it was going to cost to fix such a simple problem. |

I know your pain Chris. I'll pray for peace for you and your family. Remember the good, give up the bad. HD is good, most of the time, if you don't have the time or tools. I'm blessed with a good HD dealer. |

Par for the course with typical Harley dealers. Independent shops tend to be more reasonably priced, and if you bring them the service manual they are far less likely to screw it up than the average Harley wrench. |

Sorry about your Dad man! Sincere condolences to you and your family. I just lost my last grandparent last month and it never gets easier, but it does get better w/ some time. I feel you on the stealership frustration - i called my local to get the crank locking tool and they quoted me 99+s/h+tax. ridiculous. I didn't bother to ask about them doing the stator and on a positive note - 1/2 done last night after work. Stator in hand and shipping for rewind today! If nothing else - ridiculous stealerships nearby have just helped me be more self sufficient and learn how to do it myself! That's actually pretty damn cool IMO! Best of luck and can't agree more with Hughlysses - riding always helps me w/ stress. Hopefully you are already enjoying a ride and it's helping. |

I lost my dad in 2000, on or about the very day i bought my S3. He never got to see it, but he got a final ride up Mt. Lemmon to spread his ashes. I have 3 buells now but will never part with my first. I miss his company wit and wisdom daily. |

My dad built a 1975 FXE shovel back in '81. It was way before I was born. He gave it to me when his condition made him too sick to ride back in '06. It was his most prized possession. I don't ever plan on selling it. After we buried him I made the 3 hour trip out to see him on his shovel. I wanted to make sure he got the chance to see it again. |

Wow guys, depressing thread. My dad is 72, he is in good health and is active with no bad habits (he gave up motorcycling years ago). I don't get to see him much because we live so far apart. He was a mechanical engineer by trade and has never been very expressive of his emotions. Sometimes I feel like I did when I was a kid, always a struggle to get quality time in with him. I don't know how to relate to him that I want to make sure we (and my sons) enjoy our time together without sounding morbid. |
