I've got a combination of dirt and oil on my K&N air filter. I called K&N to find out they recommended their filter cleaner and filter oil spray to clean my air filter. I didn't realize that it wasn't as easy as wash, dry and put back on. Haha was I thrown a curve ball when I realized, I have to spend more money on my air filter. I best get better at the oil fill process! Thanks Mike. |

Soap and water will clean the old gunk out. Something with a slipping agent or detergent is needed to free up the old filter oil and crud. Then, yes, you need new filter oil. K&N will obviously say to use their brand of oil, but I've been happy with "generic" filter oil. Ought to be able to find it at most moto shops. Especially the offroad / 2-stroke specialty shops. |

As you now know, a K&N filter is not a dry filter and does need regular maintenance of being cleaned and oiled. Without being properly oiled they do little of nothing to block dirt (except the huge parts) from getting into the motor. |

be careful with the filter though and do not use compressed air, it is very easy to blow holes in the filter element and render it useless. I always just use the k&n cleaner and oil, the kits are cheap and will do numerous services. |

I found some old K&N filter oil in my garage, its about 10 years old and still works. Now I'm thinking about washing my air filter in dawn dish detergent, tho still up in the air on the cleaning part. Mike |

The cleaning part is important, a dirty filter will eventually plug. You really should remove all of the old dirt first. |

The UK off road community swear by chainsaw bar oil, which is very 'tacky' so as to be anti fling. |

I just get the K&N kit with the cleaner and the filter. Very affordable and will last you a very long time. |

Rinse it from the INSIDE towards the outside. Dirt deposits from the outside. If you wash from the outside, all you're doing is shoving the dirt further into the filter. |
