Need help diagnosing an issue. 09 1125CR 24K miles Was accelerating as normal then the bike shuts off as i was on the throttle. Bike is then hard to start but it does eventually start. I limped the 2 miles home but i had to keep giving her gas to keep the motor running. even then it would still die even when giving her gas. also was bucking really bad while on the go. it may have been shutting off and bump starting as i was going. anyway, buell dealership pulls the codes and it shows an issue with the crank position sensor. they checked the oil and it had a lot of metal in it. theyre thinking that there is a major issue with the motor that has already caused a lot of metal to end up in the motor. They couldnt diagnose it further until its had a compression test, which basically will requires tilting the motor and lots of shop hours to pay for. some other clues, found this metal in the oil screen when i last did the oil change about 2K miles ago. also the bike has been making a lot of noise since i've bought it. it seems to have more mechanical noise than other 1125s that i've heard. any ideas? The long brown-ish pieces are from your stator. It's the epoxy used between the magnets and inner/outer rotor. As for the other pieces, they could be from anywhere. The crank sensor itself is a pretty easy thing to change. It's on the left side of the engine case, right above the stator/rotor. Either way, best of luck. Please keep us updated on what they find. |

The two are probably unrelated. The cutout/die is more than likely due to the bad crank sensor and not the metal shavings. The good news is you found the shaving before major damage was done - like ventilating the cases followed by an oily slide into the guardrail... If you can figure out if the shavings are ferrous or not it might help. Certainly not scientific, but in my time here the most common "metal shavings in my screen/filter" threads have been tied to camshafts lobes or balance shaft gears. Non metal is usually the the rotor epoxy or cam chain guides. Non of those require splitting the cases unless you suspect that the shavings have migrated to other parts of the engine. |

ah ok, thanks guys! that makes me feel better about the stuff in the oil screen. i think S21125r may be right about the stuff in the screen being unrelated to the current engine issues. any one know if anyone has figure out how to check the compression without tilting the motor? |
