How do you know if it's bad? Here's the situation, my bike just started making this weird sound coming from the right side of the bike. Sounds almost like a vacuum leak, but just a little too tinny to be a vacuum leak.I traced the sound to the water pump housing using a stethoscope. The sound I'm hearing is definitely coming from there. Anyone have this problem before? |

It will leak out the seep hole if it goes bad. It's on the side of the water pump housing towards the clutch. It will leave stains if it has been leaking. Keep an eye on the coolant level. |

Yep, I had a sound coming from mine. My water pump didn't leak but it turned out to be the thrust washer going bad. |

How much of a job is it to replace it? I'm thinking of doing it myself. |

It's not terribly difficult, but it is labor intensive. On mine, I had a friend come help me. We pulled a full day Saturday, and half of Sunday. The service manual has you rotate the engine to remove the rear header. We attacked it by removing the swingarm and rear shock to get the header off. You DO have to remove the header to get the housing off. It's the housing that surrounds both the clutch and the water pump. |

When I did mine, I had a few other things to do so I just pulled the frame. Pmjolly is right, you have to pull the whole clutch side cover which requires header removal. Other than that its not bad. |

Mine has weeped in the past but I didn't notice it as under the plastics so not sure how long or when. Not weeping now and no odd noises. Coolant level is within range too. Not sure if it going bad, leaked once after sitting all winter (stored in the heated garage) or what. |

It was making a squealing sound but at a lower pitch. Almost like the low pitch sound a kettle makes just as it starts to boil not the high pitch whistle. It was also an intermittent noise. I think I went another 5-7K miles after I first heard the noise because it went away but it came back. |
