Hey guys, just got an EBR ECM for my Jardine pipe. I installed that and set the TPS and let it idle for ten minutes. No problems.

Well I'd been having some low voltage issues (haven't we all) and so I decided to put a new battery in to hopefully fix it. It started up fine if I recall correctly, and given some RPM the voltage climbed. Alright. So I shut it off.

Due to rain and work I left it alone for about five days. Start it today, let her warm up as I'm gearing up and I see a low voltage issue.

My bike always does this at idle, it'll drop to 11.8 and just stay there, which triggers the batt light. This time, it went down past that to like 11.5. I just figured I'd let it sit for long enough it had died or something, so I took it out for a ride. Voltage stayed at 11.7. Prior to this it had always climbed right up to 14.2 and happily stayed there. I rode straight home, and got a check engine light for system voltage. I've never seen that before.

So I come home, switch back to the old batt, and ride off again. Volts are slow to rise but eventually come up to 13.0 and don't come up. I get on the highway, same thing. Going through town on my way back (about 15 mins from start to finish) another check engine light, sys voltage, and despite being at 6k rpm it begins to plummet.

I keep fighting it. Sys voltage no matter what rpm, then randomly it goes away and I rise to 12.4 or something low, and hang there.

Any ideas??? I'm not sure if I installed the battery after the ecm or at the same time but I think it was after...

Also, I have a series voltage regulator that I installed which works like a champ, so that shouldn't be the problem.

I bet it's the stator. Test it and make you check to see if it's grounded. Sounds close to what mine was doing and my stator tested fine except for the ground test. Ended up most of the current from my stator was going into the case and not charging the battery.

Ya, exactly the same behavior I experienced when my stator went out. Time EBR rotor and new/rewound stator.

So why was it fine before installing the ecm

Coincidence

Although, the Race ECM does run the fans more so it does exasperate the issue, it is not the cause.

I ended up doing a stator, VR, and oiling rotor. Been perfect ever since. There was a small spot where one piece of the copper winding has melted to the center ring and grounded out the stator. It tested the perfect voltage and none of the phases crossed so they tested perfect resistance between them. Just pull the plug and put in the positive lead from the voltmeter on one of the phases and touch the negative to a ground and if you have resistance it's grounded. I just bought one of the Ricks new stators they sell now for like 225.

Tested the leads, got 8v on two of them and 35 on the third. That means it's suddenly dropped two legs, correct?

Also, best DIY crank locking tool?

Also, is there a good writeup on how to replace the stator/rotor?

Yes I've used the google tool, I wish there was just a stickied thread on how to check and how to replace it...

As soon as I get confirmation that I've gotta do this I'm going to pull the trigger on the EBR rotor and ricks stator; already have the CB605SB VR on her

Yea your stator is done. I have an air compressor and an impact gun so that's what I used instead of the crank locking tool. Get the oiling rotor and the new stator and finish up the fix. Once you do that you should be golden from here on out for issues stemming from charging.

Got both. Ouch, my wallet...

I've got a good impact, problem is it's good for 1300 ft/lbs... oh well, guess I'll have to be gentle...

Is there a good replacement thread floating around? Not that I can't figure it out, but visuals are nice and the Google search isn't working out so well for me
