I've decided I'm going to Plastidip my 1125R. Has anyone done it or seen it done? I'm just wondering what it'll look like; I plan on adding a black USAF Roundel on the radiator shrouds as well. Not like you haven't seen one before, but here's mine: |

Ive been wondering the same thing. I want to dip my lower fairing but not sure how well plastidip stands up to heat. |

After clear-coat, it should be fine.

It will take the heat. unless you melt the lower... I was wondering about the heat on mine but the pods have held up the best. start by spraying the smallest body piece first b/c you will probably have to peel it and do it again. I had the best luck with making a ghetto "clean room" basically a 3 sided room with no wind. the first coat do it nice and thin. second coat id say a normal coating then do 3 or 4 more coats. so 5 or 6 in all for just the color you want. personally id leave it matte. I glossed mine and it makes getting bugs off harder but it does make the metal flake i used pop. if your going to think about clear coating and want to be able to peel it you can really only use a PlastiDip (PD) clear or glossifier. When I do mine again i will be doing the inside of the airbox cover and the edges thick b/c they did start to peel up on their own. im sure i forgot something. Just ask. I'm more than happy to help. I recently did my front fairing stay in black. And I am painting the "cross bars" that are visible red to match the bike. I am planning on getting the pro car kit this spring/summer and doing my honda civic. Not sure if I want to do my whole bike yet. Just read up on the "dip your car" forum. Lots of info from DIY's and professional installers |

Pods only get up to about 200 if that. I imagine the lower fairing will get a bit hotter. Guess theres only one way to know for sure. |

Plastidip just showed up a few days ago, I'm in the midwest so I'm waiting for a decent temp day to apply it; it'll stick better if I can throw it on at a decent temp. I have drill this weekend and believe it should be completed by next sunday, but may be before that. |

Here's the first pic of it in progress. You can see on the nose fairing the first coat, the red shines through pretty well. As far as prep I just washed it well and ran tack cloth over it before applying. I got a decent amount of runs... they say online to apply the first coat pretty thick, but I had problems with it running around curves and stuff. As it starts to solidify and tack up though the second and third coats actually clean it up. Getting the corners of the plastics was pretty tricky to get the paint to take, but again after a few coats it does well. I left the plastics as pictured below for a reapplication tomorrow. I taped off the Buell logos and radiator scoops as well as my gopro mount on the tank, and I'd tape off the tank protector if I had one. I decided to just let her dry for now and hit it tomorrow, but honestly I think I'd be alright using them now after 2.5 coats (I say half because I applied two and sorta brushed over them as I was leaving to empty the can I was on.) For it to get where it is, it took three entire cans. I have another three since they came in a six pack, but I plan on really only using one more for now. It tacks up and solidifies after about 20 minutes, and was pretty easy to apply. If I had to do it again I'd probably make the first coat thinner, but altogether it's going well. I'll post a pic tomorrow of it getting put together. The last thing I'll do for now is put a USAF roundel on the radiator pods, then call it good. Also albert, all of our group is on twins... no particular reason but that's the way it worked out. Duc 748, Ape Falco, RC51, and the Buell. We rumble down the road... haha |

The first coat should be very thin! About 50%transparancy. The more coats you do the better off you will be. My suggestion is to do at least 5 coats. And let it cure for a few days. It is pretty soft for a few days and will easily "scratch" if touched by anything. Specially with only 2.5 coats. The dipyourcar.com forum is very helpful. Do 5-6 coats and let it cure for a few days. I did 4-5 coats of white then 5-6 coats blaze orange, a light dusting of silver metal flake and 4 coats of glossifier. I let mine cure for a week before I put it back on. Luckily I have an extra set of plastics. |

blasted you're absolutely right, I think a light first coat would have made all the difference. I'm going to head down right now and throw a few more on. Do you have a thread where you have yours? |

All done. Everything turned out alright, a couple runs here and there but overall looks pretty decent. The airbox cover is in rough shape but I only gave it two coats before I realized I should wait until my new tank protector came in so I left it and just took the tape off.

Roundel is in the mail I've got a friend in Arkansas who cuts vinyl so it should be here within the week. Nose art may happen too, but I'll pause after the roundel. |

Just my 2 cents but only 2 coats is going to be hard to peel off in one piece. It would be worth your time to Tape buell again and repaint the air box cover. The more coats the easier it is to peel, not to mention the you won't run through if you have 4+ coats |
