So during my attempt to replace my drive belt,I discovered that there is some "play" in my Primary Drive Pulley. The pulley itself moves in and out from the Primary shaft about 1/16th of an inch or so (rough estimate). Could this explain why my drive belt prefers to sit about 1/8th of an inch on the outside of the rear Drive Pulley?

I don't have a tool to lock the Primary Drive Pulley to check the locking nut torque. Has anybody tried a way to torque the Primary Drive Pulley's locking nut without the pulley tool that the Service Manual specifies?

Thanks for the help.

BTW my bike has 32k miles.

Impact gun?
put it in 1st and turn against the compression of the cylinders?
Stick a tuba-fore in the rear wheel and let the swingarm hold it while you torque the bolt?
Have someone hold the rear brake while you torque it?

Nillaice, you been playing a tuba on the back nine again?

That made me laugh just a little, tuba-fore. Heheheh.

Ok I'll remount the wheel (was changing the bearings too) and use a 2x4 to hold the wheel against the swing arm while I torque the nut down. I have a large torque wrench that will go up to the specified 81ft lbs.

My real question is is it normal to have that "play" on the Primary Drive pulley?

thanks, dean

Rouge,
Yes, That 'play' sounds abnormal to me. Is the entire pulley loose on the output shaft? Or is it just the outer part?

There's a rubber 'Cushion' in between, instead of putting it on the rear wheel

I have 2 motors out of the frame both have about 1/6" on the front pulley they ran ok on the rear drive pulley. Both have 12000 + miles on them.

Upon closer inspection, there are two parts on the pulley. There is a locking nut with what appears to be a large washer/spacer in front of it. Behind this is the actually pulley with the cogs. I can push/pull on this pulley a tiny bit, about 1/16" is my rough guess. The nut with the large washer/spacer remains stationary as I push/pull on the pulley.

It's bugging the crap out of me not knowing if this is normal or not. I haven't worked on the bike since I'm working all week but I'll check the torque value of the pulley next weekend.

Dennis, ok I feel a bit better that yours also has some play and the belt ran fine on the Drive Pulley.

I never actually had any belt issues except after I did the 2nd valve inspection, the belt started to align about 1/8" on the outside of the rear Drive Pulley. Which I found strange. Then, when I spun the rear wheel in reverse, the belt would "travel" to the inside of the rear Drive Pulley and rub against the upper belt guard. Luckily this rubbing never happened going forward! LOL!

I had a buddy with a Lightning. His rear belt also aligned the same way on his bike with less than 6k miles on it. It ran fine. But my Firebolt never had this anomaly over 30k miles.

Mine does it as well. I think it is normal.

You could try 'flipping' the drive belt.
It should be installed so you can read the lettering/logo when standing next to the bike, but some have had luck correcting the belt tracking by flipping the belt around and re-installing it so the lettering is upside down when viewed from standing next to the bike.

Since the xb&1125 have fixed axles, the alignment is rarely 'off' so the other (easy) option is to flip the belt.

Nillaice:

I have the same thing with the belt tracking under 1/16" off of the rear sprocket, and I tried the belt flip, no joy

YMMV ..

Mine does the same. Flipped or not flipped. Seems to depend on the belt. As the belt I have before (it broke during a trip.) tracked perfectly. The new one has a gap. I dunno...

check your wheel bearings as well a tight bearing will cause a few problems for sure.

Front pulley is compensating. It can have play as the cush compresses/wears a bit.
