When I first start my '09 1125R, whenever I get moving and reach 4k rpm, my dash shuts down and says "system voltage."
Well when I finally get it to go away (usually by braking and letting the clutch out so the engine drops below 1k rpm) it says 17.1 or whatever then slowly drops to thirteen. It'll do this for the first five minutes of riding.
Any ideas? Seems like most charging problems on the boards are LOW voltage.
I just purchased a 2009 1125cr and am preparing for the charging system service but seems yours blew the Voltage Regulator. I am curious how to tell if the bike has the HD mod.
Beefsupreme, it sounds like your voltage regulator is failing. 17 volts is too high and you can expect blown headlight bulbs. The cluster is shutting off to protect itself. When the stator fails, usually the issue is not enough voltage to keep the bike charge, when the VR fails it can go either too high or too low voltage, but usually it is too high.
Nikoff90, pop off your front seat and watch this video, if you have the additional wiring and plugs seen here then you have the harness.
You can post a picture of your under seat and we can help determine.
Froggy, thanks, that's what I was thinking; I owned a couple hondas so I'm familiar with blown regulators; these 1125s are just notorious for charging problems so I wanted to make sure it wasn't something that's going to keep happening.
Where's the best place to find them online? All I saw were other VRs that "also work" on the Buells, but with different specifications. I'd rather not blow anything else by using something not designed for the Buell. Is HD my only option?
American Sport Bike is your best bet for the most common parts you will need. They typically have the VR in stock and can get it to your doorstep before your local HD/Buell dealer can figure out how to order one.
There are aftermarket options if you want to go that route, the CE 605 is popular to put on the 1125, but it is not plug and play as you will have to splice connectors and figure out a custom way to mount it (can't go in the stock spot)
Sadly you will be having to go to something not design for your Buell. I have the same exact issue and have put two brand new regulators and it still does it. I'm probably going to the aftermarket one in the next month or so. For now I let the bike warm up cause as soon as the fans kick on for the first time the bike runs perfectly fine and voltage stays at 13.8-14.0. I have no idea why the stock one just suddenly does not work for my bike anymore.
Same thing on my old cr. It blew my bulbs out. Mine had the harness fix on it from the factory recall. That harness has a voltage regulator relay that will fail and cause spikes. I replaced the relay with a quality one cross referenced. Never had another issue. It cost like $14.95. It's a easy fix and much cheaper. Maybe look under the seat and see if you can find it. Could be the culprit.
Sinnister, sounds like you and I have the same issue. Once it warms up to operating temp there's no issue or spikes or anything, never goes over 14.4, and is almost always between 12 and 14. I'm looking at the CE605, but $160 sucks. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do...
The stock one is 150 so it is going to be about the same price. I paid it twice so sucks hard for me cause now I'm going to have to pay the 160 for the aftermarket. I'm going to buy the plugs to keep the stock plugs too and hopefully I wont have to worry about it anymore. If you do yours soon let me know how it works out as it will probably be another month or so before I can get to mine since it's just an occasional weekend bike, it's kind of on the back burner right now because my XB is my commuter and have second gear going out on it again so its going to have to get attention first.
My harness is removed so the relay is not the issue at all with mine.
Well, I went ahead and bought the CE605SB. Where do you get the connectors listed in the how to? I like that he retained the stock regulator so if the CE one goes bad he can switch back to stock; even if mine doesn't work 100%, it at least is manageable if I want it to be (that is, bringing it to running temp.)
So I'm looking for a Deutsch DTOP06-4P and a few Anderson SB-50 connectors. I can't find the Deutsch one anywhere, and the SB-50 ones are common; but if I can buy them from the same site to save shipping I will.
All I did for the connectors was cut the old ones off my known bad regulator. I popped them apart, opened up the crimps and plugged them in, crimping them back down. I even put my CE605 in the stock location. I also have the rotor modification done to mine. Voltage is rock solid, and has been for the last 7,000-ish miles. Doing it that way meant no splicing up the factory harness. Pretty painless.
In the article I was referred to it mentioned getting an additional connector for the sake of if the CE goes bad for whatever reason (it has happened, then got replaced under warranty) I can switch to the stock one easily.
I just can't for the life of me find the Deutsch connector; many that are similar but none that are exactly the DTP06-4P
