HI guys,

Apologies in advance....

Ive had the showa rear shock for a while but want to adjust the rear preload now as it seems a little hard for road riding.

Just wondering if there is meant to be a proper tool for adjusting it?

Ive tried the stock preload adjustment tool from the toolkit but theres not way its budging. Im trying to turn the top nut furthest from the rear wheel, which i presume is a locking nut? I have no manual as I bought the shock second hand.

Just wondering if theres atrick to adjustment, the stock shock is a piece of p**s to adjust, if i try any harder to move the nut Ill sheer the tits off it.

Can someone please help?

Use a big flat head screw driver and a hammer. Make sure your only on the lock ring.

I used the stock collar tool from the tool kit.

Its also easier if the shock is on the bike

HI mate,


I did try that but its so tight im damaging the locking nut, will try again tonight, and yes the shock is on the bike, I also tried putting the rear on a stand to see if I could take some pressure off the rear.

Can you tell me which way I should be turning the locking nut? I assumed undoing it was the normal anti clockwise if im facing the spring.

You can put the shock in a vice and work it on the bench. That's what I do. Grab it by the spacers.

Also, if you are using the right spring, you should achieve somewhere around 32mm of rider sag on 10mm of static spring compression on the bench.

If you aren't in that neighborhood, change springs.

The "preload" adjuster does not adjust preload or spring rate.

You need a lighter spring or to reduce bump damping.
