I don't understand how these people buy bikes and then don't ride them? |

Good point Figor! (I say it in my head like Igor) You might be able to tell by the general condition, wear if any on fasteners, drain plug, etc. (Message edited by johndb on September 18, 2013) |

The factory tires would look a bit old too. Not as far as wear goes, but they tend to build up that brown grime as they oxidize. Brake rotors would be a good mileage indicator too. Rock chips on the front of the exhaust. You could also call a dealer and have them look up the service records for that VIN. There are tells. Hard to do that when you're not in person though. I bought my bike on ebay as "meticulously maintained, excellent condition" and found out that it had been dropped on the garage floor (scratched radiator shroud, broken off rub nut on the footpeg, gouged bar end, and scratched case and puck), it also had the clutch weep and wasn't rideable... If I didn't drive a gas guzzler 200 miles to pick it up and have to fight the guy for 30 mins to accept the auction sale price before he even showed it to me, I would have walked away... Happy now, but what a hell of a buying experience. |
