Everything metal is powdercoated or natural metal.

All the plastics are color-impregnated (colored plastic).

There hasn't been a drop of paint on a Buell, from the factory, since 2002.

What about on the Rotax engine?

Carb cleaner softens the paint on the engine a bit (I have a finger nail knick on my clutch cover).

Why are you using carb cleaner on a Buell?

Kidding, kidding...

It was just the first aerosol de-crud kind of spray that my hands could grab off of the shelf without causing an avalanche.

I'd be surprised if it was paint.

Carb cleaner is nasty shit. But if a chemical encountered paint OR powder, it wouldn't "nick"...it would bubble and lift. If your clutch cover has a nick, I suspect it was a surface imperfection that got coated and you noticed it after the chemical cleaned the area.

That's definitely what happened. I felt my finger snag across the paint and had a speck of it under my nail afterwards. Not bad at all, just a slight surface imperfection.

Lots of solvents will soften dry paint (unsure about powdercoat, It's plastic, so I'd assume that acetone would do it). There is different chemistry in stripper though that lifts and bubbles paint. Painting different types of paint on top of each other can do this as well.

Moral of the story, just don't use carb cleaner as degreaser on gray finished Rotax parts : )
