So while my cover is off and my stator is being rewound, should I take a grinder to the stiffening ribs inside the cover? They are sharp edged, and appear to have possibly been cut down once already, but the sharp edges have obviously cut through the RTV that was put in:

Also, the discoloration here (7-8 o'clock) makes me think that perhaps these ribs should be ground down as well...

Thoughts??

The video I watched from Twin Motorcycles shows him using some sort of RTV or silicone from a distinctive Loctite dispenser, but he doesn't say what type. Unfortunately, Loctite makes quite a few products in that dispenser:

RTV 587 Blue Silicone
RTV 598 Black Silicone
RTV Black Silicone/Adhesive
RTV Red Hi-temp Silicone
Ready Gasket
RTV Clear Silicone adhesive/sealant
RTV Blue Silicone gasket maker
RTV 5699 Gray Silicone

Needless to say, I'm at a loss for figuring out what to use.

Sorry about the image size, I just wanted folks to see what I was referring to.

Any input here would be appreciated.

I ground my ribs in a few places:

Thanks hildstrom! I didn't see any before pics in there. Did they look sharp edged before you ground them down, or is it more likely that the previous owner partially ground them down?

Also, I didn't see any mention of it, but did you use any type of silicone or RTV to "bed" the stator wires into as protection from chafing/grounding against the case?

Look again, there's definitely before and after pics there. The factory milling leaves very sharp edges and not much room for the wires.
