So my bike has been having trouble idling. It will die when it is cold and run rough. I bought a new battery and replaced the plugs (it has 11k miles). This did not fix the problem. I was going through the checklist of possible causes. I was performing the fuel injector leak test and when I opened the throttle I noticed what looks to be metal shavings on top of the valves. My question is how bad is this and what will likely need to be done? Is this what is causing my problems? This has me worried. I did run it while it was real hot one day. I'm also not trying to spend an arm and a leg but this doesn't seem like an easy fix.

Consider what are the possible sources? 1.outside ingress 2.Vacuum line 3.throttle body 4.valve guides 5.valve stems 1. off of your hands, shirt sleeves, on air filter, blown or flung into open inlet ( they are not going to stay in a running motor ) 2. trash off of filter on vacuum line 3. parts rubbing and making the trash that you see, caused by operating the throttle body valves vigorously 4&5 when you roll the motor by hand with the intake open, you should see some damage to the valve |

BTW unless either an electrical event or a sensed condition trigger it you would not see a CEL, If you had not found it That and the minor damage may have lay in your engine until it was torn down for service. |

The picture is rather grainy they look like white stains on the valve heads. Take a greased swab and see if you can get some out..... |

Grainy picture. Hopefully that line I see between the valves is just the picture and not a crack. |

It is a light, no cracks. I'm trying to get down in there and will hopefully get a better sample this weekend. |
