I'll be installing the chain drive for the upcoming season and am looking for feedback from those of you already running the set-up. What brand and part # 520 chain are you running Aluminum or steel sprockets How often do you replace the chain How often do you replace the sprockets. |

I'm using a DID 520 X-Ring chain with Vortex Alum sprockets. The Vortex sprockets wear quickly -- I'm thinking about going to steel tooth models because you do replace them relatively frequently. I've not replaced a chain yet -- I bet you can get a full season out of one. What DOES wear quickly is the chain rub that fits into the swing arm. And, it's solid, so you have to cut the chain to change it (or cut the rub). This is just a stupid design, IMHO, since the life time of the chain is many chain rubs, especially if you replace them as the standoff in the rub wears out. I split my new rubs on a bandsaw, and I drilled the swing arm in the web area so I can put a nylon bolt through there and into the rub itself. That way I can change them without cutting the chain, and they stay stable and locked into the swing arm. |
