Thoughts on how to remove the outer bearing shell without destroying the pocket? I'm reasonably certain the wheel is smoked but would like to see what it looks like. Dugger et al the inner hole that the axle and spacer pass through is that inner dimension mission critical? |

I've seen it posted several places that you can lay a short section of weld bead with an arc welder in 2 or 3 places inside the shell; this will warp the race and draw it inward allowing you to knock it out of the hub. |

Hugh - I've seen that done, it works. If not, look into dry ice or liquid nitrogen. Everything except water expands when hot, contracts when cold. Z |

I'm thinking the wheel is OK since the race apparently didn't spin in the bore. Hopefully you can just replace the axle, spacer, and bearings and that'll be OK. I'd think you could even salvage the swingarm by slicing off the chewed up portion of that boss. You could substitute an outside spacer (that fits between the wheel and the swingarm) to make up the difference. Of course, that may be as much trouble as finding a decent used swingarm. |

Yeah as best I can tell the race didn't spin. Question I have though is how important is that inner bore diameter? Is it used to help locate the spacer at all? Does it serve a practical purpose? Taking rim to HD today to see what if anything they have to help remove the bearing race. |

I don't think that'll hurt anything. Once the axle is in place and tight, the spacer is locked between the inner bearing races and is stationary along with the axle. Since the other side of your wheel is undamaged, that end of the spacer should stay aligned properly which will avoid any problems getting the axle started through the center of the wheel and the axle will move the spacer into the correct position at the other side as you slide it through the bearings and into the other side of the swingarm. |

Take a propane or MAP torch to the wheel and get it just hot enough to not be able to touch it for more than a second or two. Then hold an ice cube or even better a piece of dry ice to the race. You should be able to pull the race out by hand. Zack |

Arc welding around the area where the balls run is an excellent way to shrink the bearing....Get a competent welder to run a bead around it and the bearing will virtually fall out....we use that method to remove broken bearings from blind holes on a regular basis at work. |

Just curious and figured I'd ask all the smart welders around here.... When you do it, is it more effective to create a bunch of spot welds? Or run a continuous bead in one shot? Which results in a better "shrink"? I know on sheet metal you have to use a bunch of spot welds to get less deformation. |

Id say solid bead. Simply because you WANT it to deform. Which means you need the heat you would normally avoid by tack welding. |

Run a full bead because you want the complete bearing to shrink inwards, if it needs to shrink more run a second bead . the bead of weld also gives something for either a blind bearing puller to hook on or for something to tap against if it doesn't just fall straight out. |

You can't use the harbor freight blind hole puller? I think it has an arbor big enough to remove the outer race. |

Brett no the biggest attachment is about 10-15mm to small in diameter. |
